Ice Skating

The Northbrook Sports Center Skating School follows the official Learn to Skate USA class curriculum. The Skating School will continue to add a personal touch to is educational programs and talent development as it has done for more than 50 years.

Learn to Skate USA – Basic Skills

Toddler

Sit and stand up with skates on — on- and off-ice, march in place, march forward, march and glide on two feet.

Snowplow Sam 1*

Sit and stand up with skates on — on- and off-ice, march in place, march forward, march and glide on two feet, dip in place.

Snowplow Sam 2*

March followed by a long glide, dip while moving, backward wiggles, forward swizzles, intro to snowplow stops.

Snowplow Sam 3*

Forward skating, forward one foot glide R&L. forward swizzles, backward two-foot glide, backward swizzles, snowplow stops, curves.

Snowplow Sam 4*

Forward stroking, forward one-foot glides R & L, backward swizzles (4–6 in a row), rocking horse, intro to two foot turns, two foot hop in place.

Basic Skills 1*

Sit and stand up, march forward, forward two-foot glide, intro to one-foot glides, dip, forward swizzles, intro to backward swizzles, backward wiggles, intro to snowplow stops.

Basic Skills 2*

Scooter pushes, forward one-foot glides, backward two-foot glides, rocking horse, forward swizzles, backward swizzles, intro to two-foot turns, snowplow stops, curves.

Basic Skills 3

Forward stroking, forward half-swizzle pumps, intro to forward crossovers, two-foot turns, intro to backward one-foot glides, forward slalom, forward pivots, backwards snowplow stops.

Basic Skills 4

Forward outside and inside edges on a circle, forward crossovers, backward half-swizzle pumps, backward one-foot glides, intro to two-foot spins, forward lunges.

Basic Skills 5


Backward outside and inside edges on a circle, backward crossovers, forward outside three-turns, advanced two-foot spins, hockey stops, side toe hop.

Basic Skills 6


Intro to forward inside mohawks, forward inside three-turns, backward to forward two-foot turns, backward stroking, into to one-foot spins, T-stops, bunny hop, forward spiral on a straight line, shoot the duck. 

*Indicates beginner instructional levels to prepare for hockey class progression.

Figure Skating Lessons

Group lessons are a fun, challenging and reasonably priced way to learn and improve skating skills. Children who can stand in skates without support and are trusted to leave their parents are ready to learn to skate. Students of all ages learn the proper way to skate from professionals in a structured and supervised setting. Students who register for the wrong level will be transferred into the appropriate class, if space allows. Otherwise, skaters will be removed from class and issued refunds.

General Information

Classes are held at the Northbrook Sports Center and taught in a progressive sequence. New skaters will receive an email with information about what to expect on the first day of class. This includes details about clothing and skate rentals.

Skating Makeup Classes

One makeup class will be allowed during the session. Makeups cannot be transferred from one session to the other.

Skating Levels

Snowplow Sam
Discover, Learn and Play

The Snowplow Sam levels are introductory classes for ages 4 through 6. Skaters will learn the basics of skating – agility, balance, and coordination – in a safe, positive and encouraging environment, incorporating fun and games as they more through skill progression.

Off-ice orientation prior to the first skating class:

  • Equipment check – Proper fit and lacing of skates, appropriate attire, and safety helmets
  • Practice falling and recovery, marching in place, dips, hops, and one-foot balance.
Basic Skills – FUNdamentals

Basic Skills teaches the FUNdamentals of ice skating for ages 7 through 12. Six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns. Upon completion of the Basic Skills 1-6 levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating. All classes will be well-structured with the focus on proper skill development taught in a positive, FUN, and social environment. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated.

Discover, Learn and Play – Basic 1 and 2: These introductory levels allow new skaters with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning to skate.

FUNdamentals – Basic 3–6: These levels develop all of the fundamental skating skills on the ice. Focus is on learning the ABCs of basic athleticism: agility, balance, coordination and speed.

Free Skate

After passing Basic 6, skaters move to Pre Free Skate. Each free skate level is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins and jumps — all of which build on the previous skill, providing skaters a strong foundation of all elements. These levels will be taught in a positive and interactive group format such as a bridge program, circuit classes or as an introductory training program. Instructors will focus on quality and mastery of skills.
