For over 70 years, the Village of Northbrook had a speed skater in every Winter Olympics (from 1952 through 2018). Northbrook became known as the Speed Skating capital of the world after two skaters who trained here won gold medals in the 1972 Winter Olympics. On September 29, 1995, the Northbrook Park District and Northbrook Speed Skating Club hosted an awards dinner to honor 17 Olympic speed skaters from Northbrook who brought international recognition to the Village.
Speed Skating Classes
(ICESKATING) Learn to Speedskate Class
If you like to go fast on the ice, then speedskating is for you! This class follows the Learn to Speed Skate curriculum of Learn to Skate USA, so skaters should be at or above Learn to Skate Basic 4 when they begin. Skaters will be introduced to the basics of speed skating, with an emphasis on basic position, straightaway pushes, cornering and starts. These are the skating skills necessary to join the Northbrook Speed Skating Team and begin racing. Skaters may use figure skates, hockey skates or speed skates which are available for rent. Skaters must wear helmet and gloves.
