For over 70 years, the Village of Northbrook had a speed skater in every Winter Olympics (from 1952 through 2018). Northbrook became known as the Speed Skating capital of the world after two skaters who trained here won gold medals in the 1972 Winter Olympics. On September 29, 1995, the Northbrook Park District and Northbrook Speed Skating Club hosted an awards dinner to honor 17 Olympic speed skaters from Northbrook who brought international recognition to the Village.
