The Northbrook Sports Center is one of the busiest sports venues on the North Shore, featuring two two year-round NHL-sized ice rinks. Northbrook Park District’s Hockey Program serves children who have little or no hockey experience through Adult Open Hockey for high school age players and older. Coaches from Northbrook Hockey League (NBHL) and Northbrook Bluehawks provide instruction.

 

Open Hockey Schedule

Daily Fees • $9 for 1 Hour | $13 for 1.5 Hours | $17 for 2 Hours

Sticks & Pucks

Ages 5-12

Full equipment is required for this practice-only session. Game play is not permitted, which allows for the participants to enhance their hockey skills while enjoying the company of their friends. Parents and guardians are welcome at the same fee with full equipment.

Youth Open Hockey

Ages 11-14

Bring your friends for open hockey! Full equipment is required. All players must be signed in by a parent or have a valid drop-in hockey waiver on file.

Adult Open Hockey

High School and Older

New players are always welcome at this recreational but competitive open hockey time.

Hockey Classes

Intro To Hockey

Location: Northbrook Sports Center
Ages: 4-12 Years

Introduce your child to hockey in a fun and safe environment with NBHL instruction. Classes focus on basic skating skills required for team play.

Spring Session

 

 

Hockey 1

Location: Northbrook Sports Center
Ages: 4-12 Years

The Hockey 1 program is for beginning hockey players who have progressed through Intro To Hockey classes. These skaters are ready to learn and develop more challenging hockey skills. Skaters begin playing small games and scrimmages. Required equipment: a helmet with a cage, elbow pads, shin pads, gloves and stick.

Bluehawks Mite/Squirt Powerskate Clinic

January – March 2024

Location: Northbrook Sports Center
Ages: 5-10 Years

Powerskating clinics focus on teaching the proper skating techniques to increase the players skating efficiency and effectiveness. Players practice stride technique, skating with the puck and skating with the puck under pressure situations.

Availability & Learn More

Outdoor Hockey

Outdoor Hockey is available at Meadowhill Park only during the winter months. The district needs 72 hours of weather below 15 degrees to begin freezing the rink, followed by 5 days of below-freezing weather before skating is allowed. The outdoor ice rink is not supervised. Skating involves a risk of injury; therefore, participation is at your own risk.

Rental skates are available at the Northbrook Sports Center for $8 per day. Call 847-291-2993 for details.

Northbrook Hockey League

The Northbrook Hockey League (NBHL) is a volunteer organization dedicated to giving children and young adults the opportunity to learn and play ice hockey. The League offers House and Travel programs for ages 4 (Pre-Mites) through 18. The League works closely with the Northbrook Park District and the community to provide high-quality hockey programs.

Northbrook Jr. Bluehawks

The Northbrook Junior Bluehawks is a youth ice hockey club for Mite-aged (8 and under) players offering House League and competitive Travel programs.

Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks are devoted to expanding chances for youth from diverse backgrounds to play hockey.
