Project Completed

Northbrook Park District is excited to announce the upcoming playground equipment replacement project at Cedar Lane Tot Lot located at 965 Cedar Lane. The playground was installed in 2004, is now 18 years old, and has approached the end of its life cycle. Construction is scheduled to begin mid-May 2022.

Project Updates
August 5, 2022
The District will celebrate the completion of the Cedar Lane Tot Lot Playground Replacement Project with a Pop-Up Playground Party on Wednesday, August 10 starting at 5:00pm. This free event will include a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:15pm, giveaways and refreshments while supplies last, a prize drawing and family activities in the park.

The District has encountered delays due to supply availability issues for several of the construction materials for this project including crushed stone and the new synthetic safety surface. Fortunately, we were able to find a new source for the gravel and the turf material is now on order. We are still hopeful to have the project completed this summer, despite these delays that have been beyond the Park District’s control. When the playground is open for community use, we will have a celebration at the park. Signage will be posted at the site and we will email you again at that time.

Playground completion is experiencing a delay due to supply and delivery issues beyond the Park District’s control. For these reasons, project completion has been updated from June to Summer 2022.

May 17, 2022
Playground construction is planned to begin on Monday, May 23 — weather permitting.

The District recently sent out two mailings to Cedar Lane Tot Lot neighbors. The first was a survey to discover how the playground is used and what residents would like to see in this park. The second was an invitation to vote on possible playground designs developed from the survey results.

Based on the Initial Survey:

  • 92% use the playground
  • 60% use the sand area
  • 70% prefer two smaller play structures

Based on community input, two playground designs were developed and shared via an online survey. Option A, pictured below, was selected by the neighborhood with 52.36% of the vote.

The Park Board of Commissioners has approved the purchase and installation of new playground equipment for this park, including the addition of a synthetic turf play surface to replace the wood chips. This new surface is antimicrobial and provides increased drainage, more consistent shock absorbency performance, and consistent accessibility while decreasing the labor and costs associated with wood chip maintenance. This surface will also incorporate T°Cool, a premium infill designed to absorb and release moisture to cool the turf. It slowly releases moisture throughout the day.

Construction is currently scheduled to begin mid-May, with completion in Summer 2022. Please note, the playground replacement timeline is dependent upon supply chain and equipment delivery as well as weather conditions. During the replacement, the playground is a construction site and caution should be taken in the area.

While the playground is closed, the closest playgrounds can be found at Meadow Road Tot Lot, located in the 1000 block of Meadow Road, and Crestwood Park at 1824 Milton Avenue.
