History
The Park District purchased the West Park property on October 28, 1965 from Catherine L. Melzer for $201,708, building one ice rink, an outdoor swimming pool and ball fields in 1968. A second rink was added in 1973. Several Northbrook skaters participated in the 1972 Olympics—one in 1976 and two more in 1988—giving Northbrook recognition as the “Speed Skating Capital of the World.” In 1999, a park renovation coincided with a major renovation of the Northbrook Sports Center to update both the rinks and pool.
In 2017, the Northbrook Sports Center Pool began providing greater programming flexibility and enjoyment for all ages, maximizing service to the entire community. The facility includes a 25-yard pool with six lanes, a leisure pool, a vortex pool, zero-depth entry, two diving boards, a deep water diving pool with a drop slide and a climbing wall.
In 2024, Park District staff applied for an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development opens in new tab (OSLAD) grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources opens in new tab to help fund a renovation project at West Park. Construction is slated to begin in 2026. For more information, visit District Projects.
