The first time her daughter attended the Northbrook Park District’s summer camp at age 3, Kelli Jones was slightly apprehensive.

As it turns out, Jones was pleasantly surprised at how well Elliot, who will be 5 in April, adapted to her first camp experience two years ago.

“The first summer she went, she didn’t know anybody, and I didn’t know how it was going to go,” Jones said. “But it went very smoothly. The counselors are wonderful, she made her little friends, and it was never a struggle getting her there.”

The Northbrook Park District offers dozens of summer camp options for children ages 3 to 14, including arts, theater, dance, chess, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, skateboarding, ice skating, hockey and golf. Camps cover nine weeks of summer, with pre-season camps in early June and post-season camps through mid-August.

There are half-day camps for ages 3 to 5 and full-day camps for ages 5 to 14. Many camps offer the option to attend one week at a time, giving families added flexibility. Extended camp care is available, with morning and afternoon options.

Camps provide a balanced mix of outdoor activities, skill-based learning, creativity and team-building experiences. There are also visits from guest entertainers and opportunities for field trips.

Parent Cherryl Theanchai said enrolling young children in Northbrook Park District summer camps is a wonderful way to help them prepare for preschool, because the experience provides them with structure and socialization. Her son Austin, now 4, loved World Explorers Camp last summer.

“It helped him reduce his fears of being away from parents, he enjoyed making friends and he liked the counselors,” Theanchai said. “I definitely recommend it.”

Families who register by February 18 can save 10% on most camps and workshops.

The Northbrook Park District’s Spring into Summer brochure outlines all details regarding camp times and dates.
