Among the many special athletics events organized by the Northbrook Park District, Friday Night Lights provides a unique thrill for children and families.

Held on three Friday evenings in September, Friday Night Lights events celebrate the young athletes of the park district’s soccer and flag football leagues by giving them the chance to play under the lights on premium turf and feel like superstars.

Pre-kindergarten through sixth grade students participate in multiple games throughout the evening and enjoy music, giveaways and lots of fun.

Soccer Coach Mike Hoyer attended with his 4-year-old daughter Asha, who just started playing the sport and had a great time. “Friday Night Lights is always fun for the parents, coaches and kids. There’s a different energy to the evening,” he said.

The players really enjoyed themselves, Coach Ben Schwartz agreed.

“The park district put on a great event, from the team running through a banner, to the energetic music and the raffles and giveaways,” he said. “Having an opportunity to play a night game under the lights on the turf is a special experience. The event builds team chemistry and brings the kids together, it’s truly a highlight of the season.”

It’s not common for park districts to provide such one-of-a-kind opportunities for young athletes, said Northbrook Park District Recreation Supervisors Isaac Urow and Matt Papale, who organize the Friday Night Lights events.

“Whether you’re on the field or cheering from the sidelines, it’s a night full of energy, community and fun,” Urow said. “It’s definitely a great event not to be missed!”

This year’s Friday Night Lights presenting sponsor was First Bank Chicago opens in new tab, whose Vice President and Multi Market Manager Amy Kahhat attended all three events in September.

“Friday Night Lights was such a fun and meaningful event for the community, and we truly enjoyed being part of it. Seeing families, friends, and young athletes come together each week to celebrate sports, and teamwork made it really special,” Kahhat said.

“At First Bank Chicago, we’re committed to supporting programs that bring people together and strengthen community connections. Sponsoring Friday Night Lights was a natural fit. It promotes healthy activities, encourages teamwork, and creates memories that will last well beyond the season.”
