Cast a line, take a fishing lesson, play lawn games and learn about conservation — families can do all this and more at Fall Fishing Fest, a new fishing derby taking place this Sunday, October 12, at Lake Shermerville in Northbrook.
Fall Fishing Fest is the result of a new partnership between the Northbrook Park District, Wheeling Park District opens in new tab and State Senator Julie Morrison opens in new tab, in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources opens in new tab.
This free event is about bringing people together, creating shared memories and building stronger community connections, Northbrook Park District Executive Director Chris Leiner said.
“By working alongside our colleagues at the Wheeling Park District, Senator Morrison’s office, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, we’re able to enhance local offerings with state-level support. Lake Shermerville provides a beautiful and accessible backdrop for families to discover fishing in a setting that feels close to home,” Leiner said. “It’s a great example of how collaboration can turn a simple day at the lake into something truly meaningful for our communities.”
Wheeling Park District Executive Director Jan Buchs echoed those words.
“We are excited to partner with the Northbrook Park District, Senator Morrison’s office, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to bring the Fall Fishing Fest to our community,” Buchs said. “This event showcases the importance of collaboration in offering new outdoor experiences for children and families. We hope it is the start of future collaborations that continue providing memorable experiences in parks and recreation for our communities.”
Senator Morrison said she’s looking forward to sharing one of her favorite pastimes with families in the community.
“This fishing derby will be a fun way to enjoy the outdoors and learn the joys of fishing together,” she said. “Grab your poles and come fish with us!”
Fishing poles and bait will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Families should bring their own equipment if possible.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will showcase its conservation police education trailer, and coffee and donuts will be available for purchase.
