On July 10, 2019, the Northbrook Park District broke ground on a new 44,200 square foot activity center at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. The facility, scheduled to open in January 2021, includes sweeping views from oversized windows of the surrounding prairie, parkland and neighboring Anetsberger Golf Course and will be home to a wide variety of activities.

In recognition of the natural prairie setting in one of the District’s largest community parks, the building has been named Techny Prairie Activity Center. The name honors the park in which the facility is situated while also explaining the active community hub that can be found inside the building.

Offering a cardio and strength area, two group exercise studios, an indoor track, a gymnasium, a multi-purpose room and Kids’ Corner childcare, this highly energy-efficient center will meet the community’s fitness and recreation needs in one of the most beautiful settings in Northbrook. This range of opportunities within the facility along with the strong recreation options offered by the Northbrook Park District helped drive the building’s tag line: Your place to play.

The color and fixture selections throughout the Techny Prairie Activity Center are inspired by a painting by Nyle Gordon entitled Trail Through Time. The natural tones and soft colors of the prairie evident in the painting are reimagined throughout the facility. That same color palette was instrumental when designing the building logo. The new logo, designed to complement the existing Northbrook Park District family of logos, features soft green colors and hand-illustrated waving prairie grasses that exhibit motion and reflect the natural setting of the building. The logo also features the Raleway font family, a highly-legible font with open letterforms, providing an approachable yet modern and professional typeface to the mark.
