Six new pickleball courts are open at Stonegate Park, 3435 Whirlaway Drive, allowing additional opportunities for the community to enjoy this increasingly popular paddle sport.

Included in Northbrook Park District’s Capital Improvement Plan for 2019, the courts are the District’s first dedicated space for pickleball. Drop-in players and rentals are welcome, and pickleball clinics and leagues will begin in spring 2020.

With large turnouts for pickleball clinics and drop-in programs, the District recognized a need for more places where the community could enjoy the game, said Recreation Supervisor Cameron Edelman.

“These new pickleball courts are a great addition to the Northbrook Park District,” Edelman said. “This will allow us to do even more with our pickleball programming.”

Additionally, pickleball can be played at our tennis courts with lines added for pickleball at Crestwood Park, 1824 Milton Avenue, Williamsburg Square Park, 200 Lee Road and Wood Oaks Green Park, 1150 Sanders Road. Drop-in Indoor Pickleball also is offered at Greenbriar Gym, 1225 Greenbriar Lane and the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue.

Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The game was invented in the 1960s by three dads looking to entertain their children during the summer. Today there are more than 2.5 million pickleball players in the U.S., according to the USA Pickleball Association.
