Adjacent to Northbrook Junior High School, Meadowhill Park is one of the largest and most unique parks in Northbrook. Spanning more than 32 acres, the park contains five baseball diamonds, seasonal soccer fields, football fields, Meadowhill Aquatic Center, a lighted basketball court, a Velodrome (cycling track), an outdoor ice rink, the Chalet, picnic areas, a shelter and a walking/jogging path.
History
In 1958, the Park District purchased 37.81 acres of land from the Society of the Divine Word at a cost of $198,508. They then sold five acres to School District #28 for construction of the junior high school. The Park District began developing the rest of the property in 1960, and in the late 1980s, they replaced the Meadowhill Pool with four new pools, changing the name to Meadowhill Aquatic Center. The Park District designed a new bathhouse and added a lighted parking lot, concessions, storage and other improvements. In 1994, a new pathway was constructed to join Meadowhill Park with the adjacent Meadowhill Park South, which became part of Techny Prairie Park and Fields in 2006.
Meadowhill Aquatic Center
At the Meadowhill Aquatic Center, swimmers can enjoy four separate pools in addition to a large sun deck, concession stand and locker room. Meadowhill Aquatic Center, also known as MAC, offers swim instruction for preschoolers through adults, private and semi-private lessons, parent and tot aquatics, diving lessons, junior lifeguard classes and water aerobics.
We are hopeful that the Phase 4 Bridge will be implemented prior to the start of the swimming season and less restrictive guidelines will be released by the Illinois Department of Public Health. To ensure we provide residents with the greatest access at reasonable fees following the most current guidelines, the Park District will share information in May, at nbparks.org/meadowhill-aquatic-center.
The season will kick off Memorial Day weekend and continue through Labor Day. Modifications to a traditional pool schedule will likely be in place under anticipated guidelines and could include a reservation system to manage capacity and allow for cleaning and sanitization of surfaces. Pool memberships will not be available. Details about hours of operation, fees, open swimming, lap lane use, swim lessons, programs and events will be shared after guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health is released.
Ed Rudolph Velodrome
The Ed Rudolph Velodrome, an official quarter-mile outdoor bicycle track, attracts top cyclists from the Midwest to weekly races in the summer and fall, and offers training sessions, special events and Friday night bike races for amateur riders of all ages.
Lighted Outdoor Ice Rink
Meadowhill ice rink is not supervised. Skating involves a risk of injury; therefore, participation is at your own risk. The District needs 72 hours of weather below 15 degrees to begin freezing the rinks, followed by at least 5 days of below-freezing weather before skating is allowed. Rental skates are available at the Northbrook Sports Center for $8/day.
