Young actors 8-18 years of age are welcome to audition for Northbrook Theatre Youth Company’s upcoming Fall production of Newsies Jr. Inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City, Newsies Jr. features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys’ expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what’s right.
Auditions will be held August 22-23 from 4-6:30pm at the Northbrook Theatre inside the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Ave. Pre-registration is required at nbparks.org/auditions. Callbacks will occur August 24 from 4-6pm. Not all actors are required for callbacks, and those needed will be notified by email.
There will be four casts total who will rehearse on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays from 4:30-7pm. Additional and lengthened rehearsals will occur in October. A full schedule will be provided at the cast announcement.
Recreation Supervisor Drew Kambach encourages youth to audition, stating “In addition to all the wonderful skills gained by participating, young actors will learn how a full theatre show is produced. They will audition, get cast, rehearse, and perform with the assistance and support of performing arts professionals. All our staff are college-educated with active art careers and a passion for cultivating theatre with youth.”
Northbrook Theatre Youth Company is a recreational theatre program that creates quality productions with young actors. They perform age-appropriate musicals, suitable for family viewing. Young children will have the opportunity to grow through the performing arts as they work with professional staff and perform onstage – an exciting and rewarding experience.
