On a sunny July afternoon at Northbrook Park District’s Village Green Center, Janet Brady was excited to sew and create with her fellow Crafty Ladies.

The sewing group was meeting in person for the first time since March at the new temporary Senior Center location at 1810 Walters Avenue. While the Crafty Ladies haven’t been able to get together until now, they have made hundreds of cloth face coverings for fellow Senior Center members and the community during the COVID-19 shutdown.

“I’m glad to see the ladies again,” Brady, of Northbrook, said, “We’re looking forward to getting organized at this new location.”

Equipped with adequate space for physical distancing, Village Green Center provides Senior Center members their own building for in-person activities. The Senior Center was previously located at the Northbrook Park District Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue.

“We’re so excited to see everyone,” said Senior Center Supervisor Laura Wassinger. “Friendships and connections are important, and we’re happy to return to some of the activities that make the Senior Center a gathering place in Northbrook. We are following safety guidelines, including physical distancing and cleaning routines. Face coverings are required and participants must register in advance for programs, including the ‘drop-in’ options.”

Senior Center in-person programming includes:

• Lunch and Movie
• Mah Jongg
• Art Studio
• Sewing and Crafts
• Knitting and Crocheting
• Group Fitness
• Tech Workshops
• Humanities (a hybrid of in-person and remote)

“It’s going to be great,” said Senior Center member Mary Lynn Saks. “We get to talk to people and see everybody.”

A variety of online, virtual programming is also available, including Canasta, Bingo and lectures by living history expert dramatist Leslie Goddard and motivational speaker and historian Barry Bradford.
