KABBALAH OF THE HIGH HOLIDAYS
(Ref:# 0906-1) A two-part class on Kabbalah and the High Holidays will be offered at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center on September 10 and 17 from 10-11:15am. Kabbalah is the world’s oldest body of spiritual wisdom, and the class will present the Kabbalah’s view of the High Holidays and the meaning of some of the ancient customs of the Jewish New Year. Rabbi Meir Moscowitz of the Jewish Learning Institute is the instructor. The fee for both classes is $14 for Senior Center members and $20 for nonmembers. PUBLIC SKATING SCHEDULE AND CLASSES
(Ref:# 0906-2) Session 1 ice skating classes begin on Monday, September 10 at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. For enrollment information, call the Center at (847) 291-2993. The public skating schedule is as follows:

    Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10:30am-Noon
    Wednesday     4-5:15pm
    Friday (Cosmic Skating)    8-10pm
    Saturday     4-5:15pm
    Sunday     3-4:15pm

Additional public sessions or changes will be posted at the Sports Center Office.  ###

TRACKS ALONG THE TRAIL
(Ref:# 0906-3) On Tuesday, October 2, students can learn to identify animal tracks along the Trail Through Time in Techny Prairie Park and Fields. The program, from 4-5pm, is designed for ages 8 and above; younger children are welcome to attend with an adult. The fee is $6 for Northbrook Park District residents and $10 for nonresidents. PERFORMING ARTS CLASSES BEGIN
(Ref:# 0906-4) On September 10, performing arts classes begin with the Northbrook Park District. The Performing Arts Department offers professional instruction in music, dance and drama. The choices range from private instruction in voice and piano to guitar lessons, ballet, hip-hop, jazz, fairy tale theatre and fully mounted plays and musicals. Classes are available for everyone from preschoolers to senior citizens.

SANTA AND A SING ALONG: “Y’ALL COME” CHOIR TO SING IN EVANSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT
(Ref:# 0906-5) The “Y’All Come” Choir of Northbrook has been invited to sing in the annual Evanston Symphony Orchestra Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 2 at Evanston Township High School. The concert includes music by the ESO, ballet dancing by the Evanston Dance Ensemble and choral selections prepared by Choirmaster Susan J. Young. The concert will include an audience sing along and an appearance by Santa Claus.

On September 10, the Y’All Come Choir will begin its fall season, rehearsing on Monday nights at 7:30pm in the Crestwood Room of the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. All singers are invited to join the choir, which is affiliated with the Northbrook Park District. The choir is open to anyone who wishes to enjoy singing in a group, from high school students to senior citizens. No auditions are necessary, but a registration fee is required. SKATEBOARD LESSONS
(Ref:# 0906-6) Skateboarders of all levels can learn the skills of the sport in a series of classes beginning Saturday, September 8 at Techny Prairie Park and Fields in Northbrook. Participants will learn how to stop, start, kick turns, pump, ride ramps and perform basic tricks. Ages 5-7 will be grouped in one class, which meets from 10-11am; ages 8-13 will meet from 10am-Noon. Advanced riders are welcome and will learn skills based on their abilities. The Northbrook Park District is offering the lessons with instructors from Team Skateboard Inc. Helmets are required, and protective pads are strongly encouraged. Registration is available online at www.nbparks.org and at all customer service locations. HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS
(Ref:# 0906-7) Beginning on September 19, the Northbrook Park District will accept nominations for the Northbrook Hall of Fame and the Northbrook Sports Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors volunteers in the community who have made continuous positive contributions to the Park District. Candidates should have helped the Park District for at least five years, significantly improved a program or facility and served as role models for the community. The Sports Hall of Fame recognizes athletes with a Northbrook connection who have reached professional sports status or gained recognition in amateur sports at the national, international or Olympic team level.

Letters of nomination should include a description of the person’s contributions to the Park District or national sports recognition and can be mailed to:

WINTER POOL SCHEDULE

(Ref:# 0906-8) Beginning on September 9, the Northbrook Park District will offer indoor swimming lessons on Sundays at Glenbrook North High School, 2300 Shermer Road. Parent and Infant/Toddler classes will be offered from 12:10-12:50pm and from 1-1:40pm, designed for children from 9 months to 3 years old. Children between the ages of 4 and 14 years can enroll in the Learn to Swim Program on Sunday afternoons, with six levels, each focusing on a set of skills. And, swimmers of all ages can learn synchronized swimming. Beginner and intermediate classes will be held from 3:30-4:15pm, and advanced classes will be taught from 4:15-5pm. PERSONAL TRAINING GROUP WORKOUTS
(Ref:# 0906-9) Beginning on September 11, groups of adults can meet with a personal trainer and customize a workout program, through a Northbrook Park District program. The classes will meet once or twice a week for four-week cycles, using yoga, pilates, boxing, resistance training and cardio interval training. Classes will be held at the Village Green Center on Tuesday mornings and/or Thursday mornings. For more information, call (847) 291-2980.  ###

911 KID SAFETY AWARENESS
(Ref:# 0906-10) Very young children can learn strategies for avoiding abduction through the teachings of TaeKwonDo in a class starting on Monday, September 10 at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Children ages 3-5 will be taught to be aware of their environment, so they can react to a variety of potentially dangerous situations. Parents are encouraged to attend the last class for a demonstration of concepts and skills learned through the program, and safety handouts will be available to reinforce the lessons at home. The classes will be held on Mondays from 12:30-1:10pm. The fee for 14 weeks is $168 for Northbrook Park District residents and $210 for nonresidents. FINANCIAL PLANNING BREAKFAST (Ref:# 0906-11) Adults can get answers to their financial questions at a breakfast meeting with a financial planner at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center on Friday, September 7 at 10:30am. The session can help with money matters, such as Medicare and long-term care insurance. The fee is $3 for Senior Center members and $5 for non-members. CYCLE RACING SEASON FINALE
(Ref:# 0906-12) The last Thursday night bicycle race of the season is September 6th
at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome, featuring a barbeque for the racers, fans and spectators. A full slate of bicycle racing is planned, which typically includes about 15 different contests. The races will begin at 6:45pm and will end by about 10pm. The spectator fee is $2 for ages 12-adult, and children under 12 are admitted free. There is no cost for the food; the menu includes hot dogs, brats, salads and desserts. The Velodrome is an official quarter-mile banked racing track located in Meadowhill Park, 1479 Maple Avenue, off Waukegan Road.  ###

KINDERMUSIK CLASSES
(Ref:# 0906-13) The Northbrook Park District will offer two new music and movement classes for young children, beginning on September 20 – Kindermusik Village and Kindermusik Our Time. In Kindermusik classes, teachers lead a group of parents and their children through joyful activities, using music and movement. Kindermusik Village is for parents and very young children, newborn to 18 months; Kindermusik Our Time is designed for children 18 months to 3 ½ years. Books and CDs are included, allowing the activities to continue at home. DIGITAL MOVIE MAKING
(Ref:# 0906-14) Students will be able to shoot their own videos and create movies with a new series of classes from the Northbrook Park District, beginning on September 11. Designed for ages 8-12, the classes will meet on Tuesdays from 4-5pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Imaginations can soar in this creative program; participants will be able to edit their movies, adding titles, credits, animation, music and special effects, and they’ll take home a CD/DVD of the finished product. The fee for six classes is $128 for Park District residents and $133 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. MAGIC FOR CHILDREN
(Ref:# 0906-15) Children can learn tricks from a professional magician in a series of four classes that begin on September 12 from the Northbrook Park District. The tricks involve cards, ropes, coins, mind-reading and more. All materials will be provided, and each child will receive a magic kit to take home. Designed for ages 5-12, the classes are scheduled from 4:30-5:30pm on Wednesdays at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Children will be grouped by age and will learn age-appropriate tricks. Instructor Gary Kantor teaches new tricks each session, so children who have taken the classes before can sign up again. The cost of four classes is $60 for Northbrook Park District residents and $65 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. ADULT CERAMICS CLASSES
(Ref:# 0906-16) An adult ceramics class begins on September 10, designed for all levels of ceramic knowledge and individual attention. Participants will use the potter’s wheel and learn hand-building techniques from sculpture to jewelry. Most of the basic tools are provided in the class, which will be offered on Monday nights, Wednesday nights and Thursday mornings. Sharon Robbins is the instructor; classes are held at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org.
