SKATE AND EQUIPMENT EXCHANGE
(Ref:# 0927-1) On September 29, the Northbrook Competitive Figure Skating Team will sponsor a Skate and Equipment Exchange between 10am and 1pm at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. People will be able to sell or buy used skates and skating equipment. Anyone wanting to sell can drop off equipment on September 27 from 4-7pm. Sellers can pick up their profits and any unsold items on September 29 between 2 and 3pm. For more information, call Jill Rabin at (847) 564-3330.  ###

TRACKS ALONG THE TRAIL
(Ref:# 0927-2) On Tuesday, October 2, children can become detectives with the Northbrook Park District and identify animal tracks on the Trail Through Time from 4-5pm. The Trail is a unique natural history walk, bringing prairies, wetlands and woodlands to life in Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road. The afternoon adventure is designed for ages nine and older, although younger children can attend with an adult. The fee is $6 for Northbrook Park District residents and $10 for nonresidents. CELEBRITY SOFTBALL GAME
(Ref:# 0927-3) Who’s a better hitter – a Northbrook Village official or a Park Board Commissioner? Can state representatives really cover all the bases? On September 29, local officials and well-known community figures will compete in a “Who’s Who in Northbrook” celebrity softball game, during the Fall Festival at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. Everyone is invited to come watch the friendly competition and find out if the people who run Northbrook can run the outfield! The game begins at Noon; the park is located at 1750 Techny Road, one block east of Shermer Road. The Fall Festival runs from 8:30am until 1pm and begins with a Techny Trot 5K Run/Walk, followed by a Techny Kids’ Dash. Park visitors also can enjoy sports demonstrations, golf contests, fishing, free batting cages and children’s entertainment. Visitors are encouraged to ride bicycles to the park, where a supervised bike corral will be available. BASKETBALL DATES
(Ref:# 0927-4) September 28 is the last day to register for the Northbrook Park District’s Youth Basketball Program for boys and girls in grades 2-5. The teams are formed by school and limited to 10 players each. The program’s objective is to teach children the basic skills of the game in an atmosphere that promotes teamwork and sportsmanship. Coaches are needed at all levels, and no experience is necessary; coaching clinics are available. Registration for grades 6-8 ends on November 9. The Park District also offers adult basketball leagues for men on Wednesday evenings, beginning October 17. Registration will be accepted through October 5. Interested players should contact George at (847) 291-2369 to receive an information packet and registration form.  ### 

GLITZY GIRLZ: ROCK DIVAS (Ref:# 0927-5) Girls who love makeovers, hair styling, jewelry and girly fun can attend a pop star party on Friday, October 5 at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue from 6:30-8:15pm. Glitzy Girlz staff will provide glitter makeovers, beaded hair extensions and nail polish applications to girls age 5-11. Each girl will decorate a personalized CD case holder and crystal jewelry piece. The girls also will learn to dance the YMCA, Macarena, Cha-Cha Slide, Limbo and Freeze dance. The fee is $34 for Northbrook Park District residents and $39 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. PARENT/CHILD GOLF TOURNAMENT
(Ref:# 0927-6) September 27 is the deadline to register for the first Parent/Child Tournament at the Anetsberger Golf Course on Saturday, September 29. Children ages 5-15 are eligible to play with a parent, grandparent or relative. There will be three age divisions for children: 5-8, 9-12 and 13-15. Tee Times are available from 9am-Noon and will be limited to the first 76 players; the format is a modified scramble. Prizes will be awarded in each division and for several contests on the course. The fee is $30 for one adult and one child, including lunch. Applications are available online at Sportsmansgolf.com by clicking on the link for Anetsberger and then 2007 Fall Events. BABYSITTING CERTIFICATION
(Ref:# 0927-7) Certified Red Cross instructors will teach the proper techniques for babysitting in two Saturday classes at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. On October 20 and 27, students can learn about emergency and non-emergency situations, basic first aid and taking care of infants. The classes are open to girls and boys age 11 or older and will meet from 1-5:30pm. Students must attend both classes to receive certification. The fee for both classes is $85 for Northbrook Park District residents and $90 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. COPA CHICAGO” SHOW
(Ref:# 0927-9) On Friday, October 5, 100 people will attend a special entertainment event, Ron Hawking’s Copa Chicago Show, with the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. The popular show business veteran will present songs by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Burt Bacharach and Johnny Mathis at the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel in Wheeling. The North/Northwest Senior Center Directors are presenting the event, which includes lunch and a raffle. The Northbrook Senior Center was able to obtain extra tickets to accommodate heavy interest in the show. ###

GET DOWN AND DIRTY
(Ref:# 0927-10) Volunteers of all ages are invited to get down and dirty for America and Northbrook parks on September 29 as part of a National Public Lands Day program. Each year, volunteers throughout the country join together to make a difference at their local parks and public lands. The Northbrook Park District is offering the opportunity for volunteers to become “Prairie Dawgs” for a day at the Trail Through Time during the Fall Festival at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. Between 9am and Noon, the volunteers will cut down invasive plants in the Trail wetlands. Volunteers should dress for the outdoors and wet ground. HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS
(Ref:# 0927-11) The Northbrook Park District is accepting nominations for the Northbrook Hall of Fame and the Northbrook Sports Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors volunteers in the community who have made continuous positive contributions to the Park District. Candidates should have helped the Park District for at least five years, significantly improved a program or facility and served as role models for the community. The Sports Hall of Fame recognizes athletes with a Northbrook connection who have reached professional sports status or gained recognition in amateur sports at the national, international or Olympic team level.

Letters of nomination should include a description of the person’s contributions to the Park District or national sports recognition and can be mailed to:

HARRY POTTER FAN CLUB

(Ref:# 0927-12) Wizards, witches and the universe of Harry Potter take center stage in a class beginning on September 28 from the Northbrook Park District. Designed for children in grades 3-8, the classes will meet from 4-5pm on Fridays at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Activities include wand-making, playing games, solving puzzles and cooking in addition to discussing the best-selling books and the latest Potter news. The fee for 10 classes is $65 for Northbrook Park District residents and $70 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. NEW SENIOR TRIPS

(Ref:# 0927-13) Registration is underway for two newly announced holiday trips from the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. On Friday, November 30, a group will travel to Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin for the annual show “A Fireside Christmas” and lunch at the Fireside Theatre. The cost is $92 for Senior Center members and $102 for nonmembers. On Friday, December 21, an entertaining evening begins with dinner at Lawry’s and a trip to Orchestra Hall for the Chicago Symphony’s “Christmas Yule” concert. The cost is $125 for members and $135 for nonmembers. A few seats also remain for an October 3 trip to “Thoroughly Modern Millie” at the Fireside Theatre. NORTHBROOK/CHICAGO SOCCER EVENT

(Ref:# 0927-14) The Northbrook Park District travel soccer teams (Spartans) will host Urban Initiatives in a whole club event on Friday, October 5, 2007 from 3:45- 5:30pm at Meadowhill Park, 1479 Maple Avenue.  Urban Initiatives is a not-for profit soccer program for students in underserved city neighborhoods. Demanding intense athletic activity, the program also tries to improve students’ academic performance by focusing on overall development, self-esteem, and self-sufficiency. With a focus on discipline and self control, participants receive a strict code of conduct for behavior, guidance about healthy eating and living, and an attendance code.

All Northbrook U8-U11 players are invited to play soccer with the Urban Initiatives players, and the U12-U14 players can volunteer as coaches, linesmen and referees.  Urban Initiatives is expected to field about 100 players. For more information, call Stephanie Grabill at (847)-205-5394, Neil Hirshman at (847)-509-1871 or see www.urbanititiatives.org. ###
