FALL FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 29

(Ref:# 0920-1) On Saturday, September 29, the Northbrook Park District will host a Fall Festival at Techny Prairie Park and Fields from 8:30am-1pm. The entire community is invited to explore and enjoy the one-year-old park on Techny Road, where a huge parcel of land was transformed into a recreational showpiece. Family activities, sports demonstrations, contests and food will be available. Visitors are encouraged to ride bicycles to the park, where a supervised bike corral will be available.

Beginning at 8:30am, the Techny Trot 5K Run/Walk will welcome people into the park. Race participants are encouraged to register before the event at www.nbparks.org or in person at the Village Green Center. A Techny Kids’ Dash will follow the race. After 9am, children can enjoy face painting, clowns and balloon artists. Park visitors also can enjoy fishing, free batting cages, demonstrations by professional soccer and lacrosse players, golf contests, a “Who’s Who in Northbrook” softball game and skateboarding demonstrations and open skating. Children and adults can tie-dye T-shirts for a $5 donation to the Northbrook Arts Commission and join volunteers in removing invasive plants from the award-winning Trail Through Time. The park also offers a playground, pathway system and picnic shelters. DEADLINE FOR ACTION TERRITORY TRIP

(Ref:# 0920-2) September 24 is the deadline to register for a Columbus Day trip to Action Territory in Kenosha, Wisconsin with the Northbrook Park District. Students in grades K-8 can enjoy laser tag, mini-golf, batting cages, water wars and arcade games on the October 8 trip, which will begin from the Leisure Center at 9am and return by 3pm. The fee is $40 for Northbrook Park District residents and $45 for nonresidents. Extended care is available before and after the trip for an additional fee. NATURE AT NIGHT

(Ref:# 0920-3) On September 26, children can discover how animals in Illinois prepare for winter as part of Nature at Night on the Trail Through Time. The outdoor adventure, designed for ages 8 and up, will begin at the Trail Through Time Council Ring next to Illinois Road in Techny Prairie Park and Fields. Younger children can attend with an adult. The program is scheduled from 5:30-6:30pm, and the fee is $6 for Northbrook Park District residents and $10 for non-residents. SUPER SENIOR DAY (Ref:# 0920-5) On Wednesday, September 26, the Northbrook Park District will bring driving services to adults and seniors. The Secretary of State Mobile Unit will travel to the Northbrook Senior Center to conduct a two-hour class on Rules of the Road from 9:30-11:30am. Vision screenings and driver’s license renewals will be available between 10am and 2pm. Drivers also will be able to obtain duplicate or corrected licenses, ID cards and vehicle renewal stickers. Drivers over the age of 75 must take a road test at the Department of Motor Vehicles, but they still can have their vision screened and take the written test in Northbrook. The special event is open to all drivers 50 years and older; they do not need to be members of the Senior Center or residents of Northbrook. Registration is required by September 25. GOLD MEDAL HABITAT KIT (Ref:# 0920-6) Residents concerned about the environment and nature conservation can pick up a free Gold Medal Habitat kit at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue and find out why biodiversity, the variety of plant and animal life, is as important for Northbrook as it is for the rain forest. The kit contains tips for making green spaces more inviting, with ideas for landscaping, plant choices and rain gardens. Bird feeding and bird house plans are included as well. HALLOWEEN DOLL WORKSHOP (Ref:# 0920-7) Children can decorate their favorite dolls at a unique Halloween workshop on Monday, October 22 at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue, from 6:30-7:30pm. The Northbrook Park District is offering a new class called “Kreative Kreations – American Girl Halloween Doll Clothes” for children ages 3-12 to attend with a parent. Each child will design a Halloween blanket, decorate an outfit and create a piece of jewelry for a favorite doll. Participants do not need an American Girl doll to take part in the program; they can bring a doll similar in size. The fee is $34 for Park District residents and $39 for nonresidents. PUMPKIN PATCH (Ref:# 0920-8) The popular Pumpkin Patch returns to the Northbrook Leisure Center on Wednesday, October 24 from 5:30-7pm. Children ages 3-10 are invited to the annual Halloween pumpkin-carving event. Each child needs to bring one adult and will receive a pumpkin to carve and/or decorate. The necessary supplies will be provided, and participants will take home a keepsake photo and goodie bag, in addition to their pumpkins. Pizza will be served. The fee is $30 for Northbrook Park District residents and $35 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations, by mail and online at www.nbparks.org. PARK LARKS INVITE NEW MEMBERS (Ref:# 0920-10) Senior adults who enjoy Broadway show tunes are invited to join the Park Larks, a Northbrook Park District singing group. Under the direction of former concert pianist Evelyn Binz, the singers rehearse on Thursday mornings from 9:30-11:30am at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Both men and women are welcome in the group and can join at any time after becoming members of the Senior Center. The Park Larks entertain from September through June at senior centers, shopping centers and retirement homes. They are scheduled to perform on Thursday, September 20 at 8pm at Classic Residence by Hyatt, 2500 Indigo Lane in Glenview and on October 12 at 2:30pm at Belmont Village, 2200 Golf Rd in Glenview. HARRY POTTER FAN CLUB (Ref:# 0920-11) Calling all muggles! Fans of Harry Potter can register for a series of classes that begin on September 28, to enjoy book discussions and share fun activities. Designed for children in grades 3-8, the Northbrook Park District classes will meet from 4-5pm on Fridays at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Activities will include wand-making, playing games, solving puzzles and cooking in addition to discussing the books and latest Potter news. The fee for 10 classes is $65 for Northbrook Park District residents and $70 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. PARENT/CHILD GOLF TOURNAMENT
(Ref:# 0920-9) The first Parent/Child Tournament will be held at the Anetsberger Golf Course on Saturday, September 29. Children ages 5-15 are eligible to play with a parent, grandparent or relative, and there will be three age divisions: 5-8, 9-12 and 13-15. Tee Times are available from 9am-Noon and will be limited to the first 76 players.

The format is a modified scramble. Prizes will be awarded in each division and for several contests on the course. The fee is $30 for one adult and one child, including lunch. September 27 is the deadline to register for the tournament. Applications are available online at Sportsmansgolf.com by clicking on the link for Anetsberger and then 2007 Fall Events.
