TECHNY TROT TO OPEN FALL FESTIVAL
(Ref:# 0913-P1) Registration is underway for the Techny Trot 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, September 29 at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. Beginning at 8:30am, the race will launch a Fall Festival at the park. A Techny Kids’ Dash will begin immediately after the race. The USA Track and Field Certified course will take racers along the paths in Techny Prairie Park and Fields, including the Trail Through Time.  The race will have male and female divisions with the following age groups: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and above. Overall male and female winners will receive plaques, and age division champions will receive medals. All participants will take home T-shirts and goodie bags. Race participants are encouraged to register before the day of the event at www.nbparks.org or in person at the Village Green Center.

The Northbrook Park District invites the entire community to enjoy the festival, which will include demonstrations by professional soccer and lacrosse players, free batting cages, golf contests, fishing, a “Who’s Who in Northbrook” softball game, skateboarding demonstrations and open skating, face painting and tie-dying. Visitors are encouraged to ride bicycles to the park, where a supervised bike corral will be available. WHEEL THROWING
(Ref:# 0913-1) All hands on the wheel! Adults can learn and enjoy wheel throwing in a series of 12 Thursday night ceramics classes, beginning on September 20 at the Northbrook Leisure Center. Taught by Tim Davidson, the classes offer basic techniques for throwing bowls and cylinders. Decorative techniques and glazing will add a touch of design; the finished pieces will be fully functional. Classes will be held from 7-9:30pm; the class fee includes 25 pounds of clay, glaze and some tools. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. SPORTS ‘N’ SCIENCE
(Ref:# 0913-2) A new program offers a combination of sports and science for children ages 4-6. Beginning on September 21, the Northbrook Park District will offer Sports ‘N’ Science on Friday mornings at the Leisure Center, from 9:30-11am. Children will begin in the gym for 45 minutes of high-energy athletics and then will be escorted to a classroom for hands-on science fun. The fee for 12 classes is $180 for Northbrook Park District residents and $185 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. NATURE AT NIGHT
(Ref:# 0913-3) On September 19, children can enjoy a campfire and Native American games as part of Nature at Night on the Trail Through Time. On September 26, the program will focus on animals preparing for winter in Illinois. The outdoor adventures, designed for ages 8 and up, will begin at the Trail Through Time Council Ring next to Illinois Road in Techny Prairie Park and Fields. Younger children can attend with an adult. The programs are scheduled from 5:30-6:30pm, and the fee is $6 for Northbrook Park District residents and $10 for non-residents. Registration is required. REDUCED RTA FARES
(Ref:# 0913-4) Seniors can ride the CTA, Metra and Pace for half-fare, if they take a trip to the Northbrook Park District’s Senior Center on Friday, September 14. Registration will be offered from 11am to 1pm. Riders need to be 65 or older and will need to bring one of the following: a driver’s license, passport, RTA reduced fare permit, state ID, U.S. Immigration Alien Registration card or other official government ID with a photo and birth date. The service is free and available to anyone, but preregistration is necessary. Call the Senior Center at (847) 291-2988 to preregister.  ###

FIRST AID AND SAFETY FOR CHILDREN
(Ref:# 0913-5) Children can learn about first aid and home safety in two American Red Cross programs from the Northbrook Park District on September 15. Children ages 6-8 can attend First Aid for Little People, from 1-2:15pm. Those who complete the one-day course will receive an attendance certificate and will take home a first aid kit. The second program, Home Alone, is offered from 2:30-3:45pm for ages 6-9. Youngsters will learn how to handle phone calls, deal with strangers, administer first aid and take care of emergency situations. Participants also will learn safe ways to entertain themselves at home and will receive a Home Alone workbook and a certificate of participation. Both classes are taught by certified Red Cross instructors at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The fee for each class is $25 for Park District residents and $30 for nonresidents. TOUCH-A-TRUCK
(Ref:# 0913-6) Grab the hard hats, the children and the cameras. Curious children can climb aboard and explore an assortment of trucks on Saturday, September 15, when the popular Touch-a-Truck returns to Northbrook. There will be dump trucks, moving vans, fire trucks and more on display from Noon-2pm at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road. This hands-on activity is free and open to the public, but children must attend with an adult. No pre-registration is necessary. ###

BOARD MEETING SEPTEMBER 19
(Ref:# 0913-7) The Northbrook Park District Board of Commissioners will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 19 at 7pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The public is welcome to attend. Agendas for the monthly meetings are posted online at www.nbparks.org in the Board meeting section. ###

SUPER SENIOR DAY
(Ref:# 0913-8) On Wednesday, September 26, the Northbrook Park District will bring driving services to adults and seniors at no charge. The Secretary of State Mobile unit will travel to the Senior Center to conduct a class on Rules of the Road from 9:30-11:30am. Vision screenings and driver’s license renewals will be available between 10am and 2pm, and drivers will be able to obtain duplicate or corrected licenses, ID cards and vehicle renewal stickers. Drivers over the age of 75 must take a road test at the Department of Motor Vehicles, but they still can have their vision screened in Northbrook. The program is open to all adults 50 years and older; they do not need to be members of the Senior Center or residents of Northbrook. Registration is required by September 25. SKATE AND EQUIPMENT EXCHANGE
(Ref:# 0913-10) On September 29, the Northbrook Competitive Figure Skating Team will sponsor a Skate and Equipment Exchange between 10am and 1pm at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. People will be able to sell or buy used skates and skating equipment. Drop-off times for those wanting to sell will be September 26 and 27 from 4-7pm. Sellers can pick up their profits and any unsold items on September 29 between 2 and 3pm. For more information, call Jill Rabin at (847) 564-3330.  ###

GET DOWN AND DIRTY
(Ref:# 0913-11) Volunteers of all ages are invited to get down and dirty for America and Northbrook parks on September 29 as part of a National Public Lands Day program. Each year, volunteers throughout the country join together to make a difference at their local parks and public lands. The Northbrook Park District is offering the opportunity for volunteers to become “Prairie Dawgs” for a day at the Trail Through Time in Techny Prairie Park and Fields. Between 9am and Noon, the volunteers will cut down invasive plants in the Trail wetlands. Volunteers should dress for the outdoors and wet ground. The program takes place during the Fall Festival at the park, which also includes fishing, family entertainment, contests and sports demonstrations. ###

GUARD-A-KID™
(Ref:# 0913-13) On September 19, the Northbrook Park District is offering a class on child safety and stranger danger, for parents and children to take together. The class, called Guard-A-Kid™, will present a video and teach children how to respond if approached by a stranger. They also will have photographs and fingerprints taken for ID kits, which will be ready to take home at the end of the class. A coloring activity and snack are included. The class is from 6-7:30pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue, and is designed for children ages 3-10 to attend with a parent. The fee is $26 for Park District residents and $31 for non-residents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. STORIES FROM WORLD WAR II
(Ref:# 0913-14) On September 19, Earl Epstein will share his first-hand stories about World War II at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Earl, who earned a Purple Heart, four Battle Stars and Unit Commendations, will explain how he survived a torpedo hit and played a role in Patton’s Rhine River Crossing. He’ll also talk about the troops landing on Omaha Beach and the horror they witnessed. The program is scheduled from 7-8pm, and the fee is $2 for Northbrook Park District residents and $3 for nonresidents. The Center is located at 3323 Walters Avenue. SOCCER FEST SEPTEMBER 16
(Ref:# 0913-15) Attention soccer players: the Northbrook Park District is hosting the 4th annual Soccer Fest on Sunday, September 16 from 11am to 3pm at the soccer fields at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road. The event will include a 3-on-3 tournament, team photos for soccer players, a coaches’ game and a used soccer equipment drive for Urban Initiatives. GPS ADVENTURES
(Ref:# 0913-16) A new program called Adventures with GPS Receivers will teach children basic orienteering and introduce them to Geo-Caching, an outdoor adventure hobby that uses Global Positioning Satellite devices, in a series of Thursday afternoon classes that start September 20 at the Leisure Center. Students will set out on a “geo-safari” and be able to blog about their adventures. The program is designed for ages 8 and up; the fee for six classes is $128 for residents and $133 for non-residents.
