A VALUABLE PENNY: PARK COMMISSIONER HONORED
(Ref:# 1025-P1) Northbrook Park District Commissioner Penny Randel has been honored for her dedication and volunteer service to the National Recreation and Park Association. On September 29, at the NRPA Congress & Exposition in Indianapolis, the Board of Trustees presented Penny with a proclamation - recognizing and commending her for exemplary service, enthusiasm and dedication to parks and recreation, and outstanding leadership on the Board of Trustees. Penny served on NRPA Board for 12 years - on the Executive Committee, as chair of various committees and as Secretary for four years. Last year, she received a Meritorious Service Award from the American Park and Recreation Society, a branch of the NRPA, for her volunteer work on behalf of national parks and recreation, as well as her extensive volunteer projects in Northbrook. A former teacher, Penny has been a Northbrook Park District Commissioner since 1993. ###

(Ref:# 1025-1) A close encounter with a wolf, flu shots and a dad and daughter jewelry workshop are just a few of the activities the Northbrook Park District is planning for November. Here are some of the dates to note:

GHOSTLY GOLF
(Ref:# 1025-2) In the spirit of Halloween, bats, bones and all manner of scary stuff inhabit the miniature golf course at Sportsman’s Country Club, where October is Customer Appreciation Month. Guests who purchase two rounds of mini-golf will receive credit for one free round, and those who purchase four rounds will receive credit for two free rounds. The practice range also is offering price treats for junior players and seniors (60 and older), and anyone buying a 10-bucket pass will receive credit for two free large buckets. Both the range and mini-golf will remain open, weather permitting, into November. For more information, call (847) 291-2351, extension 2. ###

HALLOWEEN LUNCH AND BINGO
(Ref:# 1025-3) Adults and seniors are invited to a Halloween Lunch and Bingo on Friday, October 26 at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Ghosts and witches are welcome, and a prize will be awarded for the best costume. The celebration runs from 11:30am-2pm. The fee is $8 for Senior Center members and $12 for nonmembers. HAUNTED HOUSE
(Ref:# 1025-4) Two Haunted houses featuring a “Tour of Terror” will welcome visitors to the Northbrook Sports Center on October 26,27,30 and 31 between 6-9pm. The entry fee is $4 in advance or $5 at the door. A younger children’s version of the Haunted House will run from 4-5pm on the same dates, at a cost of $2 per person. The younger “Tour of Terror” is for children ages 5-8 and contains scary props, scenes and decorations but no live characters. Special Halloween public ice skating is available each of those nights from 7-9pm. A Halloween Pass that includes the Haunted House, ice skating and skate rental is $8 in advance and $10 at the door. BATTING CAGES STILL OPEN
(Ref:# 1025-5) Batter up! The batting cages at Techny Prairie Park and Fields will close for the season on October 28. Monday through Friday hours are 4-10pm, and weekend hours are Noon-10pm. Six batting cages are available, and players can choose to swing at baseballs or softballs, with 12 pitches for $1. Teams or groups can reserve the cages in 30-minute intervals. FLU SHOTS 
(Ref:# 1025-6) On November 2, the Northbrook Park District Senior Center will provide flu and pneumonia shots from 10am to 1pm at the Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Medicare will cover the cost for seniors, who need to bring their cards with them. Otherwise, the fee is $26 for a flu shot and $45 for a pneumonia shot. The program is open to everyone, but preregistration is required. For more information, call (847) 291-2988.  ###

ICE SKATING COMPETITION
(Ref:# 1025-7) Everyone is invited to watch the “Falling Leaf Open,” an annual ice skating team competition on November 9-11 at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. Events are scheduled on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Sunday for recreational skaters of all ages, and admission is free. Skaters from Northbrook, Glenview, Wilmette, Highland Park and other rinks are expected to take part in this 25th annual open team competition. Synchronized skating teams and team groups will compete, from tots to advanced freestyle levels. For more information on times and teams participating, call (847) 291-2993.  ###

BASKETBALL EVALUATION DAY

(Ref:# 1025-8) On Sunday, November 11, the Northbrook Park District will evaluate all 6th-8th graders who have registered to play basketball in the 2007-2008 season. The evaluations will take place at Glenbrook North High School Field House and will last approximately 75 minutes. Sixth-grade boys and girls will be evaluated at 12:15pm, and 7th and 8th graders are scheduled for 1:30pm. The deadline to register for 6th-8th grade winter basketball is November 9. MOTHER/DAUGHTER LITTLE MISS BEAUTY
(Ref:# 1025-9) On November 16, girls can enjoy a day of beauty with a favorite adult at a Kreative Kreations program at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. From 6:30-7:45pm, the girls will design lip gloss, shower gel, lotion and body glitter. The program is designed for girls ages 3-10, and the fee is $37 for Northbrook Park District residents and $42 for nonresidents. KABBALAH 101
(Ref:# 1025-10) A two-part class on Kabbalah, described as an introductory course on Jewish mysticism, will begin on November 19 at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The class will meet from 10-11:15am on November 19 and 26. The instructor is Rabbi Meir Moscowitz of the Jewish Learning Institute. The fee for both classes is $14 for members of the Senior Center and $20 for nonmembers. For more information, call (847) 291-2988.  ###

DADDY/DAUGHTER HOLIDAY JEWELRY GIFTS 
(Ref:# 1025-11) On Thursday, November 29, girls and their fathers can share a night out at a holiday jewelry-making class at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Glitzy Girlz will provide crystals, charms and beads, and each couple can create necklaces and bracelets to give as gifts, along with one for the young designer to wear. The program, for ages 4-11 with a parent, will run from 6:30-7:30pm. The fee is $35 for Northbrook Park District residents and $40 for nonresidents. Additional daughters are welcome to attend for a fee of $23. Registration is available by mail, at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. ADULT CERAMIC MENORAH WORKSHOP
(Ref:# 1025-12) A three-week ceramic menorah workshop for adults will begin on Friday, November 2 at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Participants will shape clay into unique candle holders and then paint and glaze their creations. The workshops will run from 9:30-11:30am, and the cost is $30 for Northbrook Park District residents and $35 for nonresidents. TURKEY SHOOT DEADLINE
(Ref:# 1025-13) October 31 is the deadline to enter the popular Turkey Shoot golf tournament on November 3 at Sportsman’s Country Club, 3535 Dundee Road. The “shotgun” event is a four-person scramble with handicaps, beginning at 9am. Each team’s handicap is based on a percentage of the team’s total. All players are expected to have a verifiable USGA handicap in order to participate in the tournament, which includes lunch, the use of a golf car and valuable prizes. SENIOR THANKSGIVING LUNCH
(Ref:# 1025-16) On November 16, the Northbrook Park District Senior Center will host a Thanksgiving lunch at 11:30am at Manor Care, 3300 Milwaukee Avenue in Northbrook. Entertainment is also on the menu. The fee is just $7 for members of the Senior Center and $14 for nonmembers. Reservations are limited and must be made by November 9.
