ARCTIC WOLF: A PACK OF LESSONS
(Ref:# 1011-1) On Friday, November 9, children and adults will have a rare opportunity to see an arctic wolf up close at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Wildlife rehabilitation expert Jan Smith will return for a popular show-and-tell event, bringing a wolf that she keeps outside her home. She will present two programs, from 6-6:30pm and 7-7:30pm, to accommodate everyone who wants to be part of this unique experience. The fee is $7 for Northbrook Park District residents and $10 for nonresidents; a special rate is available for Scouts. GHOSTLY GOLF
(Ref:# 1011-2) In the spirit of Halloween, bats, bones and all sorts of scary stuff inhabit the miniature golf course at Sportsman’s Country Club, where October is Customer Appreciation Month. Guests who purchase two rounds of mini-golf will receive credit for one free round, and those who purchase four rounds will receive credit for two free rounds. The practice range also is offering price treats for junior players and seniors (60 and older), and anyone buying a 10-bucket pass will receive credit for two free large buckets. PARENT UNIVERSITY
(Ref:# 1011-3) October 19 is the deadline for early registration for the 8th annual Parent University on November 3. The event offers educational sessions, parent networking and a book and resource fair from 8am until 1:30pm at Glenbrook North High School, 2300 Shermer Road. Workshops will cover a wide range of topics for parents of every age group, from early childhood through high school, presented by child development experts. The Northbrook Park District, Northbrook Citizens for Drug and Alcohol Awareness (NCDAA), Glenbrook North High School and community organizations co-sponsor the event. The early registration fee is $25; registration at the door is $30. Registration is accepted at all Park District customer service offices and online at www.nbparks.org. BABYSITTING CERTIFICATION
(Ref:# 1011-4) Children can learn the proper techniques for babysitting from certified Red Cross instructors in two Saturday classes at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. On October 20 and 27, students can learn about emergency and non-emergency situations, basic first aid and taking care of infants. The classes are open to girls and boys age 11 or older and will meet from 1-5:30pm. Students must attend both classes to receive certification. The fee for both classes is $85 for Northbrook Park District residents and $90 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. BATTING CAGES STILL OPEN
(Ref:# 1011-5) The batting cages at Techny Prairie Park and Fields will remain open for business until October 28, when they’ll close for the season. Monday through Friday hours are 4-10pm, and weekend hours are Noon-10pm. Six batting cages are available, and players can choose to swing at baseballs or softballs, with 12 pitches for $1. Teams or groups can reserve the cages in 30-minute intervals. The Northbrook Park District also offers birthday party packages, which include the exclusive use of batting cages, pizza and soft drinks. FLU SHOTS
(Ref:# 1011-6) Get ready to roll up your sleeves for a flu shot. On November 2, the Northbrook Park District Senior Center will provide flu and pneumonia shots from 10am to 1pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Medicare will cover the cost for seniors, who need to bring their cards with them. Otherwise, the fee is $26 for a flu shot and $45 for a pneumonia shot. BASKETBALL EVALUATION DAY
(Ref:# 1011-7) On Sunday, November 11, the Northbrook Park District will evaluate all 6th-8th graders who have registered to play basketball in the 2007-2008 season. The evaluations will take place at Glenbrook North High School Field house and will last approximately 75 minutes. Sixth-grade boys and girls will be evaluated at 12:15pm, and 7th and 8th graders are scheduled for 1:30pm. The deadline to register for 6th-8th grade winter basketball is November 9. COSMIC SKATING
(Ref:# 1011-8) On Friday nights, ice skaters can enjoy Cosmic Skating from 8-10pm at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. The evening entertainment features a professional DJ with music, theatrical lighting, special effects and games. Regular skating prices apply, and all ages are welcome. DIGITAL CAMERAS
(Ref:# 1011-9) Photo editing is the focus of a new series of digital camera classes beginning on October 11 at the Northbrook Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Participants will use Adobe Photoshop and will learn how to condense pictures to send them more quickly by email. Classes run from 9:30-11:30am on four consecutive Thursdays and are open to all adults. The fee is $120 for members of the Senior Center and $130 for nonmembers. A basic knowledge of Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP Operating System is required, along with keyboard experience. For more information, call the Center at (847) 291-2988. ###

NEW SENIOR TRIPS
(Ref:# 1011-10) Registration is underway for a holiday mystery trip and a “Big Band” show with the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. On Friday, December 7, a group will leave the Senior Center at 10am and return at 7:30pm for a mystery trip with lunch. The group will receive clues about their destination, with a prize awarded for the correct answer. On Wednesday, January 23, adults can enjoy a trip to the Fireside Theatre in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin for “Best of the Bands,” a new musical tribute to the great bands, accompanied by a cast of professional singers and dancers. The trip also includes lunch and time for browsing in five gift shops. A few places remain for a November 30 trip to the Fireside Theatre for “A Fireside Christmas” with lunch. AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM
(Ref:# 1011-11) On October 22 and 23, adults can refresh their driving skills with a two-day class at the Northbrook Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Geared to drivers age 50 and over, the AARP Driver Safety program consists of two four-hour sessions, from 9am-1pm both days, taught by a trained State of Illinois Driver Safety Program instructor. The fee is $10 to cover materials. Any licensed driver may attend, regardless of age. To register or get more information, call (847) 291-2988. ###
