FLU SHOTS (Ref:# 1101-1) On Friday, November 2, the Northbrook Park District Senior Center will provide flu and pneumonia shots from 10am to 1pm at the Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Medicare will cover the cost for seniors, who need to bring their cards with them. Otherwise, the fee is $26 for a flu shot and $45 for a pneumonia shot. HOLIDAY BAZAAR (Ref:# 1101-2) On November 8 and 9, the Northbrook Park District Senior Center will offer a holiday bazaar of handmade craft items, jewelry, clothing and gifts. The bazaar will run from 9am-5pm on November 8 and 9am-3pm on November 9, at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Vendors can rent an eight-foot table for both days for $22 or two tables for $40. ARCTIC WOLF: SHARE THE EXCITEMENT (Ref:# 1101-3) On Friday, November 9, children and adults will have a rare opportunity to see an arctic wolf up close at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Wildlife rehabilitation expert Jan Smith will return for a popular show-and-tell event, bringing a wolf that she keeps outside her home. To accommodate everyone who wants to be part of this unique experience, there will be two programs, from 6-6:30pm and 7-7:30pm. The fee is $7 for Northbrook Park District residents and $10 for nonresidents; a special rate is available for Scouts. BASKETBALL EVALUATION DAY (Ref:# 1101-4) On Sunday, November 11, the Northbrook Park District will evaluate all 6th-8th graders who have registered to play basketball in the 2007-2008 season. The evaluations will take place at Glenbrook North High School Field House and will last approximately 75 minutes. Sixth-grade boys and girls will be evaluated at 12:15pm, and 7th and 8th graders are scheduled for 1:30pm. The deadline to register for 6th-8th grade winter basketball is November 9. MOTHER/DAUGHTER LITTLE MISS BEAUTY (Ref:# 1101-5) On November 16, girls can enjoy a day of beauty with a favorite adult at a Kreative Kreations program at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. From 6:30-7:45pm, the girls will design lip gloss, shower gel, lotion and body glitter. The program is for girls ages 3-10, and the fee is $37 for Northbrook Park District residents and $42 for nonresidents. HALL OF FAME DEADLINE APPROACHING (Ref:# 1101-7) The Northbrook Park District is accepting nominations for the Northbrook Hall of Fame and the Northbrook Sports Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honors volunteers in the community who have made a significant contribution and helped the Park District for at least five years. The Sports Hall of Fame recognizes the accomplishments of Northbrook youth who have reached professional sports status or gained recognition in amateur sports at the national, international or Olympic team level.

AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM (Ref:# 1101-9) On November 19 and 20, adults can refresh their driving skills with a two-day class at the Northbrook Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Geared to drivers age 50 and over, the AARP Driver Safety program consists of two four-hour sessions, from 9am-1pm both days, taught by a trained State of Illinois Driver Safety Program instructor. APPLAUSE FOR THEATRE DEPARTMENT (Ref:# 1101-10) The Northbrook Park District Performing Arts Department has received two highly sought-after grants - from the Illinois Arts Council and the Target Corporation. For the 14th year in a row, the Department, under the direction of Gregg Dennhardt, Ph.D., has received a grant from the Illinois Arts Council to offset general operating expenses. This year's grant is for $8,430.
The theatre staff also received a grant of $2,000 from the Target Corporation, to provide free bus transportation to qualifying schools for field trips to theatre performances. School groups can attend weekday performances by the Northbrook Musical Theatre for Young Audiences, arranged specifically for them, and the theatre staff can provide study guides, curtain talks and backstage tours to enhance the learning experience. The Northbrook Musical Theatre for Young Audiences is in its 13th season of presenting theatre for children, performed by a company of professional adult actors. The current show, “Winnie the Pooh,” runs through November 17. The winter production is “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” and “Aladdin” is the spring production. The Performing Arts Department also operates the Northbrook Theatre Children’s Company, described as “theatre by youth…for youth.” Performances of “The Wiz” will begin in December at an intimate theatre in the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. PARK DISTRICT RECEIVES BUDGET AWARD (Ref:# 1101-11) For the 7th year in a row, the Northbrook Park District has received a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, known as GFOA. A certificate of recognition was presented to Business Manager Joanne Antosh, who was designated as primarily responsible for the award for the annual budget. GFOA calls the award “a significant achievement” that reflects a commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. The association is a nonprofit group serving more than 16,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. ###
