CANCER AWARENESS CONCERT
(Ref:# 0508-1) Tickets are on sale for a unique musical event from the Northbrook Park District. The Y’All Come Choir will perform Sing For The Cure®, A Proclamation of Hope, in conjunction with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The concerts will be presented on Saturday, June 7 at 7:30pm and Sunday, June 8 at 3pm at the Northbrook Theatre, 3323 Walters Avenue, Northbrook. 

On Saturday, Melissa Forman of WLIT Radio will narrate the performance, and Kathy O’Malley of the “Kathy and Judy Show” on WGN Radio will narrate on Sunday. Carl Meyer, Orchestra Director at Glenbrook North and South High Schools, will conduct a volunteer orchestra, and long-time choir accompanist Bev Sheridan will serve as pianist. Beth Bassler, a Spanish teacher at Glenbrook North High School, is one of the soloists; other featured singers include Laurie Geiger, an aide at Westmoor School, and Michael Gail, from the Glenview Public Library.

Tickets can be purchased through the Northbrook Park District Performing Arts Office at (847) 291-2367 and online at www.northbrooktheatre.org. The price is $10 in advance, $12 at the door, or $25 for VIP tickets that include a reception after the

performance. The Y’All Come Choir, a Northbrook Park District program, is in its 19th year and has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., as well as many area venues. For more information, call Sue Young at (847) 291-2960, ext. 165.  ###

ART IN THE PARK
(Ref:# 0508-2) Seven artists from Northbrook will participate in Art in the Park―A Northbrook Fine Arts Festival, scheduled for July 12 and 13 at Village Green. The following were selected by a professional jury to be in the show: Ken Call (watercolor), Penny Glass (mixed media), Bonnie Lecat (acrylic), Leslie Pomerance (ceramic), Marlene White & Eve Rapaport (ceramic) and Karen Santucci (oil). Also chosen to appear is award-winning artist Dennis Downes, a former Northbrook resident whose work has been exhibited throughout the country and abroad.

Presented by the Northbrook Arts Commission, Northbrook Park District and Village of Northbrook, the two-day event will feature about 100 artists, a community art project, children’s hands-on art activities, a silent auction, international food and nonstop musical entertainment, including national performers. On Saturday, July 12, Northbrook’s Y’All Come Choir will sing from 12:30-1:15pm. The hours of the art festival are 10am-5pm on Saturday, July 12 and 11am-5pm on Sunday, July 13. A variety of media will be represented, including paintings (oil, acrylic and watercolor), ceramics, jewelry, wood, furniture and glass. During the event, volunteers are needed to donate an estimated 190 hours of time. KIDS FISHING DERBY
(Ref:# 0508-3) On May 17, the popular Kids Fishing Derby will return to Lake Shermerville in Wood Oaks Green from Noon to 2pm. Beginning at 11am, volunteers from the Izaack Walton League, a national conservation organization, will show children how to bait and tie a hook and how to cast a line. They’re also donating prizes, which will be awarded in two age groups: 4 to 8 years and 9 to 12 years. Children can bring their own equipment or use rods, reels and bait from the Park District, and fishing is on a “catch and release” basis. No experience is necessary, and no fishing license is needed during the derby. Snacks will be available for purchase. For more information, call Julie Hansen at (847) 291-2995. ###

CAMP DEADLINES
(Ref:# 0508-4) May 16 is the deadline to request a refund for Session 1 Summer Camp programs, if your plans have changed. The Northbrook Park District offers a wide assortment of camps and clinics, with options including half-days and extended care. Orientation sessions for parents will be held on June 4, which also is the deadline for friendship requests for camp programs. The registration deadline for Session 1 General Camps is June 6. NORTHBROOK-ON-ICE
(Ref:# 0508-5) Tickets are still available for the 39th annual Northbrook-On-Ice, showcasing the talents of skating school students at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. Almost 400 skaters will perform in “Hollywood Skate of Fame,” which features musical favorites from movies, theatre and popular recording artists during four performances on May 9-11.

Supervising the shows are two young women who used to perform in Northbrook-On-Ice: skating school coordinators Heather Aseltine, the director, and Vicky Klinko, assistant director. They’ve been working on the structure of the show since June of last year. Among the highlights:

a combined number with the Icettes and Junior Icettes (44 girls); a performance of 16 boys and girls from the “Special Persons Ice Skating Experience,” known as SPICE; and a memorial tribute to Jerry Mulsoff, the former maintenance supervisor at the Sports Center who designed and built the sets for the ice show for at least 20 years.

Performances of Northbrook-On-Ice are scheduled for Friday, May 9 at 7:30pm, Saturday, May 10 at 2 and 7:30pm and Sunday, May 11 at 2pm. Tickets are on sale at the Sports Center for $8 and $8.50, depending on seating. For more information, call (847) 291-2993. ###

PING GOLF EVENT

SENIOR VOLUNTEER LUNCH
(Ref:# 0508-7) On Friday, May 16, the Senior Center will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, beginning at 11:30am at 3323 Walters Avenue. The program features a catered lunch, entertainment by the North Shore Harmonizers - a women’s choral group- and a ceremony to thank the volunteers who help make the Senior Center a welcome place. All adults are welcome to attend the event; the cost is $10 for Senior Center members and $15 for nonmembers. To sign up or get more information, call (847) 291-2988.  ###

AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM
(Ref:# 0508-8) On May 12 and 13, adults can refresh their driving skills with a two-day class at the Northbrook Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Geared to drivers age 50 and over, the AARP Driver Safety Program consists of two four-hour sessions, from 9am-1pm both days, with a trained State of Illinois Driver Safety Program instructor. The fee is $10 to cover materials. Any licensed driver may attend, regardless of age, but class size is limited. To register or get more information, call (847) 291-2988. ###

CYCLE RACING STARTS
(Ref:# 0508-9) On your mark, get set―for the season opening of cycle races at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook on Thursday, May 15. The Northbrook Park District and Northbrook Cycle Committee invite the public to attend Thursday night races to watch cyclists compete at the track, reaching speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Races begin at 7pm, and the spectator fee is $2 for ages 12 and up; children under 12 are admitted free. One of only a few official quarter-mile bike tracks in the country, the Velodrome attracts top cyclists from the Midwest to weekly races and also offers training sessions, special events and Friday bike races for all ages. AUDITIONS FOR SINGING COMPETITION
(Ref:# 0508-10) Do you love to sing? Do you think you could be a star? Now is your chance to find out, by entering the search for the best singer in Northbrook. All Northbrook residents are invited to audition for the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition, a friendly contest designed to showcase undiscovered local talent. Auditions will take place on June 4, starting at 7pm, and June 7, starting at 3:30pm, at the Village Green Center, 1810 Walters Avenue. Contestants will choose the song and bring a CD or sheet music; the Park District will provide an accompanist.

On June 17 and 24, the semifinalists will step up to the stage and perform at Park Fest concerts, with a winner chosen at the concert on July 1. Any Northbrook resident can audition, but contestants must register in advance. The singing competition is sponsored by Barbara Byrne and Kati Spaniak of Prudential Preferred Properties. BUILDING MENTAL MUSCLE
(Ref:# 0508-11) Adults can learn mental exercises on Tuesday, May 20 from 1:30-3pm at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Described as an interactive workshop, the program is designed to help keep the brain active and healthy. The fee is $1 for Senior Center members and $2 for nonmembers, and registration is required by May 19. For more information, call (847) 291-2988.  ###

NEW SENIOR TRIPS
(Ref:# 0508-12) Holy Cow! The Senior Center is offering a trip to Milwaukee to see the Chicago Cubs play the Brewers; an adventure on a canal boat pulled by horses; and an assortment of theatre trips. Registration is underway for the following:

    June 18 - Oprah’s Chicago, a visit to the Oprah store and tour of Oprah sites throughout Chicago
    June 26 - “Barefoot in the Park” at the Fireside Theatre in Wisconsin
    July 16 - LaSalle Canal Boat Tour with lunch at Starved Rock State Park
    July 31 - Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee
    August 13 – “The Rock & The Rabbi,” at the Fireside Theatre
    October 1 – “Dirty Dancing―The Classic Story on Stage”

In addition, a five-day excursion to Branson, Missouri is on the schedule for October, and a New Year’s Eve trip already is being planned―to San Antonio and Dallas. For more information, call the Senior Center at (847) 291-2988.  ###  

CORPORATE GOLF DISCOUNT
(Ref:# 0508-13) Sportsman’s Country Club is offering golf discounts to employees of any company based in the Northbrook Park District. Employees can obtain a corporate card that includes 20 18-hole rounds of golf, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, for a fee of $660, which is approximately 20% off the regular fee.
