BOOK DRAMATIST BARBARA RINELLA (Ref:# 0524-1) There’s still time to sign up for a special event that will leave everyone laughing: On June 1, book dramatist Barbara Rinella presents “I FEEL BAD ABOUT MY NECK And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman” at Chevy Chase Country Club. The book, written by Nora Ephron, offers a frank, funny and moving look at women getting older and dealing with the ups and downs of daily life. The Northbrook Senior Center has arranged for the presentation and lunch, for a fee of $29 for members and $39 for non-members. People can reserve a table of eight or sign up individually. WEEKEND SWIMMING (Ref:# 0524-2) Get ready for a taste of summer fun over the Memorial Day holiday weekend with swimming at the Sports Center Pool. The preseason pool hours for Public Swim and Lap Swim are as follows:
Saturday, May 26 – Monday, May 28 - Noon-8pm Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3 – Noon-8pm Monday, June 4 – Friday, June 8, 4-8pm
Summer season pool hours will begin on June 9 at the Sports Center Pool and Meadowhill Aquatic Center. The Park District is adding special hours at the Village Green Registration Office to purchase pool and tennis memberships. Individuals and families can purchase season memberships on Saturday mornings through June 23 and on Wednesday evenings through June 13. SUMMER ICE SKATING (Ref:# 0524-3) May 25 is the early fee registration deadline for Summer Sessions of ice skating. All classes are held at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. A skater’s placement slip, signed by an instructor, needs to be presented at registration time. Introductory classes do not require placement slips for registration. The Sports Center also offers Ice Skating and Dance Camp for eight weeks during the summer. Campers will receive skating instruction and practice ice time, as well as structured dance classes. TREASURES, TRINKETS AND TRASH (Ref:# 0524-4) On June 8 and 9, the Northbrook Park District Senior Center will offer Treasures, Trinkets and Trash, a yearly sale at the Leisure Center. The hours on Friday are 9am-5pm, and Sunday hours are 9am-2pm. Rent a table, sell your unwanted goods and keep the profits, or just come to buy other treasures. An eight-foot table costs $22, and two tables can be rented for $40. There will be a separate area for handcrafted items, and lunch will be available both days. The deadline to rent tables is June 1. FISHING WITHOUT A LICENSE (Ref:# 0524-5) If you ever wanted to go fish, now is your chance. Every summer, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources waives the need for a fishing license for four days. This year, the dates are June 8-11. You can bring a rod or use one of ours and try your luck at two Northbrook Park District locations - Lake Shermerville at Wood Oaks Green, 1150 Sanders Road, or the pond at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road. Rods and tackle from Access to Fishing are available free of charge at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. There’s no need to register, and all ages are welcome. ###
KIDS FLEA MARKET (Ref:# 0524-6) Young entrepreneurs can start getting ready for the Kids Only Flea Market, which opens for business on Saturday, June 23, immediately following Kids Fest in Village Green. Children can set up shop, selling their old games, toys, books and collectibles. The kids are the bosses here, pricing and selling the merchandise and running their own booths. The sellers will be charged $5 per table, and the registration deadline is June 9. The young businessmen and businesswomen must be in grades 1-7. All items must be in good condition, and bicycles, clothing and large items are not allowed. The Northbrook Arts Commission will have a tie-dye booth at the event. PICNIC PERMITS (Ref:# 0524-7) Planning a picnic? Three Northbrook parks offer shelters and scenic spots that can be reserved for picnics. Seven picnic areas can be reserved – two at Wood Oaks Green, four at Techny Prairie Park and Fields and the Gazebo at Village Green. Grilling is permitted at three of the sites. Groups of 15 or less can use picnic areas without a reservation on a first-come, first-served basis, but small groups can make a reservation to guarantee availability. Groups of 16 or more must reserve and pay a fee to reserve a picnic area. The Northbrook Park District has a picnic request form, which must be filled out at least 10 working days before the picnic date and submitted to the Administrative Offices at 545 Academy Drive. ADOPT-A-PARK (Ref:# 0524-9) Share your pride in Northbrook by adopting a park! The Northbrook Park District invites neighborhood groups, service clubs and schools to adopt a park. Schools can use their adopted park as an outdoor classroom, and neighborhood groups can plan events, fundraisers and volunteer cleanup days. The Park District will work with groups to plan events and will continue to be responsible for regular maintenance of the parks. Groups that adopt a park will receive recognition with a sign at the park. For more information about adopting a park, call (847) 291-2960, extension 130. ###
PARK FEST BEGINS JUNE 5 (Ref:# 0524-10) Dust off the lawn chairs and find the picnic blankets. Park Fest, the popular outdoor concert series, kicks off on June 5 at Village Green in downtown Northbrook. The first concert features The Class of ’68, a rock and roll band that captures the energy and enthusiasm of the 1960s. Returning to the concert series this summer is the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition, a contest to find the best undiscovered singer in Northbrook. All Park Fest concerts begin at 7:30pm, and the singing competition will begin at 6:30pm on June 19, 26 and July 3. Food service from area restaurants also will begin at 6:30pm on concert evenings. JOIN THE SENIOR CENTER (Ref:# 0524-11) Attention returning snowbirds: Active senior adults can make new friends and share experiences at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, which offers dozens of programs, special events and trips designed to enhance the quality of life for adults 55 and older. The Center has more than 800 members and will accept half-year memberships that begin in July. Programs include tap and line dancing, cardio-rhythmics, ceramics, exercise classes, a singing group, card games, digital photography, sewing and crafts, knitting and crocheting, holiday parties and trips to theatres, museums and casinos. The staff continues to expand programming, recently adding Latin dancing, a session on Sudoku and a class on laughter. Members receive discounts on classes and trips, priority registration for trips and a monthly newsletter. In addition, they can participate in investment clubs and drop-in programs at no charge. The half-year membership is just $12 for Northbrook Park District residents and $17 for non-residents. Upcoming events include a cruise, casino visit and trips to “Jersey Boys” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” The Senior Center also provides services such as counseling, driving classes and support groups.
