PARK FEST 2008
(Ref:# 0522-1) Get your picnic blankets ready and dust off the lawn chairs. On June 10, the popular outdoor concert series, Park Fest, will kick off at the Village Green with the big band sound of the Alan Gresik Swing Shift Orchestra. Returning to the concert series this summer is the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition, a friendly contest to find the best amateur singer in Northbrook.

Park Fest concerts begin at 7:30pm, and the singing competition will begin at 6:30pm on June 17, 24 and July 1. On concert evenings, food service from area restaurants also will begin at 6:30pm. The Northbrook Park District is pleased to announce the lineup of music and food for Park Fest 2008:

KINDERMUSIC OUR TIME
(Ref:# 0522-2) The early childhood music and movement program Kindermusik Our Time will begin a summer session called Zoo Train! on June 12 from 9-9:50am at the Village Green, 1810 Walters Avenue. Designed for children ages 18 months through 4 years to attend with a parent, the program nurtures cognitive, language, emotional, social, physical and musical development. The fee for five sessions is $102 for Northbrook Park District residents and $128 for nonresidents. TEAMS CHALLENGE COURSE
(Ref:# 0522-3) For unusual outdoor adventures, team-building activities and cooperative games, bring your group to the Teams Challenge Course, operated by the Northbrook Park District in the woods of Meadowhill Park. The 14-element course includes a variety of exciting elements, including the Squeeze Box, Incomplete Bridge and Nitro’s Crossing. Guided by trained facilitators, participants can develop leadership, trust and cooperation while learning about strategic planning, problem-solving and the ability to change. Each program is customized to meet the needs of the group. Sports teams, management teams, office personnel, school groups and youth groups are welcome. Programs are designed to fit within a four-to-eight-hour time frame, and reservations are required. For more information, call Kelli at (847) 291-2369. ###

BOARD MEETING MAY 28
(Ref:# 0522-4) The Northbrook Park District Board of Commissioners will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 28 at 7pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The public is welcome to attend. Agendas for the monthly meetings are posted online at www.nbparks.org in the Board meeting section. ###

RULES OF THE ROAD
(Ref:# 0522-5) A free Rules of the Road review class will be offered on May 28 from 9:30-11:30am at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Conducted by an instructor from the Secretary of State’s Office, the two-hour class will help prepare drivers for the written test and will provide information about the vision screening. TENNIS RESERVATIONS
(Ref:# 0522-6) Beginning on May 26, tennis players can reserve court time at Wood Oaks Green with the reservation system at the courts or by calling (847) 291-2992. The reservation center operates from 8am-8pm daily through September 1 for the hard surface and clay courts. Residents can purchase tennis passes, which provide the following: 7-day advance reservations, priority play on courts 1-4, free use of practice balls and unlimited play during the 2008 season at Wood Oaks, with reservations. Applications for tennis passes are in the Spring/Summer Recreation Guide and at all customer service locations. For more information, call (847) 291-2980.  ###

HOLIDAY CLOSING
(Ref:# 0522-7) On Monday, May 26, Northbrook Park District classes and programs will not meet, due to the Memorial Day holiday, and all Registration and Administration offices will be closed. Classes will resume and offices will reopen for business on Tuesday, May 27. For more information, call (847) 291-2980.  ###

ANNUAL DANCE RECITAL
(Ref:# 0522-8) The annual Dance Recital is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 at 1pm at the Leisure Center Theatre, 3323 Walters Avenue. The recital will feature 45 dance students, ranging in age from 2 to 14. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased in advance by calling the Performing Arts Office at (847) 291-2367 or purchased at the door. The Park District’s Dance Department offers classes in tap, ballet, jazz and hip-hop; classes will resume in September.  ###

AUDITIONS FOR SINGING COMPETITION
(Ref:# 0522-9) Who’s the best singer in town? We’re about to find out. All Northbrook residents are invited to audition for the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition, a friendly contest designed to showcase undiscovered local talent. Auditions will take place on June 4, starting at 7pm, and June 7, starting at 3:30pm, at the Village Green Center, 1810 Walters Avenue. Contestants will choose the song and bring a CD or sheet music; the Park District will provide an accompanist.

On June 17 and 24, the semifinalists will step up to the stage and perform at Park Fest concerts, with a winner chosen at the concert on July 1. Any Northbrook resident can audition, but contestants must register in advance; registration forms are available at all customer service locations. JOIN THE SENIOR CENTER
(Ref:# 0522-10) Attention, returning snowbirds: Active senior adults can make new friends, travel and share experiences through the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, which offers dozens of programs, special events and trips to enhance the quality of life for adults age 55 and older. Programs include tap and line dancing, exercise classes, a singing group, card games, computer classes, holiday parties and trips to theatres, museums and casinos. Upcoming events include trips to see “Avenue Q,” “Barefoot in the Park” and a Chicago Cubs game.

Members receive discounts on classes and trips, priority registration for trips and a monthly newsletter; they also can participate in drop-in programs at no charge. The Senior Center also provides services, such as counseling, driving classes and support groups. The yearly membership is just $24 for Northbrook Park District residents and $34 for nonresidents. Adults are invited to visit the Center at 3323 Walters Avenue between 9am-4pm Monday through Friday or call (847) 291-2988 for more information.  ###

OPEN ICE DANCING
(Ref:# 0522-11) Open Ice Dancing on Monday nights will begin June 2 at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road, from 6-7:30pm. Skaters can enjoy freestyle ice dancing on their own or can sign up for private lessons. The open sessions will continue through August 25. On August 11 and 25, the ice time will be 6:10-7:40pm.  Normal ice time fees apply, beginning at $7 for 30 minutes. For more information, call the Sports Center Office at (847) 291-2993. ###

KIDS FEST
(Ref:# 0522-12) Returning for a second year, the award-winning recording artist and educator Nelson Gill will perform at Kids Fest on Saturday, June 21 from 10:30-11:30am, bringing the sounds of Caribbean reggae and calypso to the Village Green in downtown Northbrook. His lyrics contain positive messages about friendship, perseverance and multi-cultural understanding. The concert is free and open to all ages. After the show, the Kids Only Flea Market will open for business as children entering grades 1-7 can sell games, toys, collectibles and jewelry until 2pm. “ALADDIN” ENDING
(Ref:# 0522-13) Saturday, May 24 is the last chance to see performances of “Aladdin” at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue in Northbrook. The entertaining show is from the Northbrook Musical Theatre for Young Audiences, a resident company of adult actors performing family-style productions. Show times are 10:30am and 1pm; the musical runs about one hour. All seats are reserved and are $8 in advance and $10 online and the day of the show. SUMMER DRAMA WORKSHOPS
(Ref:# 0522-14) The Northbrook Park District is accepting registration for Summer Drama Workshops for children in grades 1-10. Campers will attend professionally led classes in all aspects of theatre, culminating in a final performance. Beginning on June 15, the Babes on Broadway Workshop offers daily classes in singing, dancing and acting for students entering grades 1-2. The Creative Drama Workshop begins June 23 for students in grades 3-5, with scenery, costumes, makeup and props supporting the creative efforts. Children in grades 6-10 can study all aspects of the theatre, both on stage and behind the scenes, with the Theatre Arts Workshop, beginning June 16 under the direction of Northbrook Theatre Artistic Director Gregory Dennhardt. The workshops include field trips and outdoor activities. The Northbrook Park District offers two sessions of each workshop during the summer, and extended care is available.
