CYCLE RACES BEGIN
(Ref:# 0517-6) Enjoy the thrill of high-speed professional cycle racing on Thursday evenings, beginning May 17 at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook. The Northbrook Cycle Committee and the Northbrook Park District invite the public to watch cyclists compete each week, reaching speeds of up to 40 miles an hour around the banked bike track. One of only a few official quarter-mile bike tracks in the country, the Velodrome attracts top cyclists from the Midwest to weekly races and also offers training sessions, special events and Friday bike races for all ages. Thursday night races begin at 7pm, and the spectator fee is $2 for ages 12 and up. Children under 12 are admitted free. Northbrook residents can use the track when it is not reserved for races or training. The Velodrome is located at 1479 Maple Avenue in Meadowhill Park. IMPORTANT CAMP DATES
(Ref:# 0517-7) May 18 is the deadline to request a refund for Session 1 Summer Camp programs, if your plans have changed. The Northbrook Park District offers a wide assortment of new and returning camps this summer, beginning with June Mini Camps and lasting through Awesome August, a one-week camp extension that ends August 17. Parent Camp Orientation sessions will be held on June 6, to provide a forum for questions and to allow parents to meet some of the camp staff and hear their plans. June 6 also is the deadline for friendship requests for camp programs. The registration deadline for General Camps, Session 1 is June 8. For more information, check the 2007 Camps, Workshops and Clinics Guide, visit www.nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2980.  ###

PRESCHOOL ADDING AFTERNOON CLASSES
(Ref:# 0517-8) The popular Sunshine Preschool is expanding, offering afternoon classes for children ages 4 and 5 during the next school year. The classes will meet four times a week, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:45-3pm, beginning in September. Sunshine Preschool, managed by the Northbrook Park District, has a “learning through play” philosophy. Teachers use songs, stories and daily projects to deliver their lessons, and children gain educational and social skills while enjoying arts and crafts, music, science and community-based field trips. The teachers focus on the individual students with a very caring approach in a bright and cheery classroom.

Because classes are held at the Leisure Center, students are able to enjoy plays at the Northbrook Theatre, create projects in the ceramics studio, cook in the kitchen, take nature walks and play games in the gym. They also can benefit from intergenerational activities, such as trick-or-treating at the Senior Center and watching the Park Larks practice their singing. Sunshine Preschool provides a warm and comfortable introduction to school, and the schedule follows the local school district’s calendar. Registration is being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents who are interested in the afternoon program are welcome to visit the current morning classes with advance notice. To register or obtain more information, call (847) 291-2995. ###
