FISHING DERBY
(Ref:# 0515-2) On May 17, the popular Kids Fishing Derby will return to Wood Oaks Green, 1150 Sanders Road, from Noon to 2pm. Volunteers will be on hand before the derby to show children how to bait and tie a hook and how to cast a line. Prizes will be awarded in two age groups: 4 to 8 years and 9 to 12 years. Children can bring their own equipment or use rods, reels and bait from the Park District, and fishing is on a “catch and release” basis. No experience is necessary, and no fishing license is needed during the derby. Snacks will be available for purchase. For more information, call Julie Hansen at (847) 291-2995. ###

NATURE AT NIGHT
(Ref:# 0515-3) Children ages 7-10 are invited to take part in an outdoor adventure of discovery with Nature at Night on June 11 from 4-5pm at the Trail Through Time in Techny Prairie Park and Fields. With the help of environmentalist Julie Hansen, they’ll discover what grows on the prairie and which way the wind blows. Class size is limited; the fee is $5 for Northbrook Park District residents and $9 for nonresidents. For more information, call Julie Hansen at (847) 291-2995. ###

POOL PASSES
(Ref:# 0515-4) The Village Green Center is adding special evening and weekend hours to process season pool passes. Northbrook Park District residents can register for passes on Wednesday evenings from 5-7pm on the following dates: May 21, 28, June 4 and 11. Saturday hours will be available from 8am to Noon on May 17, 24, 31 and 21. One family member must present proof of residency, and each family member over the age of two years will need a Universal ID Card. For more information, call (847) 291-2980. ###

ADULT SOCCER DEADLINE (Ref:# 0515-5) Registration will be accepted through May 23 for an adult outdoor summer soccer league from the Northbrook Park District. The women’s league will play on Wednesday nights; men will play on Thursdays, and a co-ed league will play on Mondays, all from 6-10pm. The season will begin June 21 and run through August 23, consisting of eight regular games, followed by playoffs. Players must be 18 years or older; T-shirts will be provided. Games will be played on the turf field at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, and the team fee is $1,000 for a 20-person roster. For more information, call (847) 291-2369. ###

SYNCHRO TRYOUTS
(Ref:# 0515-6) Tryouts will be held on May 21 from 6:30-8pm for the championship Teams Elite Synchronized Skating team at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. Synchronized skating, also called synchro, is a highly technical form of figure skating, similar to ice dancing, and characterized by speed, accuracy and intricate formations. The current team of 23 skaters won first place at the ISI (Ice Skating Institute) Synchronized Championships in St. Louis in April, becoming national champions in the Junior Youth division. Tryouts are open to skaters seven years and older, level Beta 2 and higher. For more information, call the Sports Center at (847) 291-2993. ###

SENIOR VOLUNTEER LUNCH
(Ref:# 0515-7) The Senior Center will thank its volunteers with lunch and a recognition ceremony on Friday, May 16, and all adults in the community are invited to attend. The North Shore Harmonizers, a women’s choral group, will provide entertainment for the event, which begins at 11:30 at the Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon thanks the volunteers who help make the Senior Center a welcome place. The cost is $10 for Senior Center members and $15 for nonmembers. SAFETY TOWN
(Ref:# 0515-8) A Parent Orientation for Safety Town will be held on Thursday, May 22 at 6pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Friendship requests for Safety Town must be submitted by May 16. Designed for ages 4-6, the popular program teaches children the importance of safety in everyday situations. Children travel within miniature streets to learn about traffic safety, and firefighters will visit to discuss fire safety. The program runs Monday through Friday from May 27 through June 6, with a choice of morning or afternoon sessions.

The fee is $160 for Northbrook Park District residents and $200 for nonresidents. For more information, call (847) 291-2980.  ### 

BICYCLE RACING BEGINS
(Ref:# 0515-9) The official bicycle racing season opens on May 15 at 7pm at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome, 1479 Maple Avenue in Meadowhill Park. Championship races are held at the quarter-mile cycling track on Thursday nights and select weekends. The public is invited to enjoy the exciting and fast-paced action at the banked track, one of only a few official quarter-mile bike tracks in the nation. The fee for spectators is $2 for ages 12-adult; children under 12 are free. The Velodrome also offers evening training sessions and Friday bicycle races for all ages, beginning June 13. RULES OF THE ROAD
(Ref:#0515-10) A free Rules of the Road review class will be offered on May 28 from 9:30-11:30am at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Conducted by an instructor from the Secretary of State’s Office, the two-hour class will help prepare drivers for the written test and will provide information about the vision screening. “ALADDIN” PERFORMANCES
(Ref:# 0515-11) Performances of “Aladdin” will run on Saturdays through May 24 at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue in Northbrook. The entertaining show is from the Northbrook Musical Theatre for Young Audiences, a resident company of adult actors performing family-style productions. Show times are 10:30am and 1pm; the musical runs about one hour. All seats are reserved and are $8 in advance and $10 online and the day of the show.
