SINGING COMPETITION RETURNS (Ref:# 0320-1) For the third year in a row, the Northbrook Park District will host the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition, a friendly contest designed to showcase undiscovered local talent at Park Fest summer concerts. Returning as vocal coordinator of the competition is Stephanie Riggle, a local voice and music instructor, who’s expecting more talent to surface. “If Round Three is anything like the first two, we are in for a great show!” she says. “Hopefully, singers we have not seen yet will come out to audition.”
Auditions will be held on June 4 at 7pm and June 7 at 3:30pm at the Village Green Center. The singing competition semi-finals will take place on June 17 and 24, with a winner chosen on July 1. Any Northbrook resident can audition, but contestants must register in advance.

FINANCE AWARD (Ref:# 0320-1A) For the 15th year in a row, the Northbrook Park District has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the GFOA, the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. The certificate is the highest recognition in the area of government and financial reporting. Business Manager Joanne Antosh received special recognition as the person most responsible for preparing the award-winning comprehensive annual financial report. The GFOA is a nonprofit professional organization serving approximately 16,000 government finance officers in North America. ###
SUMMER SKATING (Ref:# 0320-2) On March 31, registration begins for spring and summer ice skating sessions for Northbrook residents. Skaters must present signed placement slips, unless they’re enrolling in an introductory level class. The Spring Session runs for three weeks, beginning on May 12. Summer Session A begins the week of June 2, and Session B begins the week of July 14. Non-resident registration begins on April 23. ICE SHOW TICKETS (Ref:# 0320-3) Tickets for Northbrook-On-Ice 2008 will go on sale to the public on Monday, March 31. More than 300 skaters will perform in “Hollywood Skate of Fame” on Friday, May 9 at 7:30pm, Saturday, May 10 at 2 and 7:30pm, and Sunday, May 11 at 2pm. Dazzling costumes, thrilling skating and entertaining music are part of this annual event held at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. BATTING CAGES COUPON (Ref:# 0320-4) The batting cages at Techny Prairie Park and Fields will swing open for business on April 19 with a special coupon offer of 20 tokens for $10. The normal price is $1 per token or 6 tokens for $5. Each token is good for 12 pitches, baseball or softball.

FREE EMERGENCY CELL PHONES FOR SENIORS (Ref:# 0320-5) Northbrook residents who are over the age of 65 and do not have a cell phone can receive a free emergency phone on Friday, April 18 at 10am at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The phone only can dial 9-1-1, in case seniors need the police, fire department or paramedics. Reservations are necessary for this program from the Cook County Sheriff’s office; call the Senior Center at (847) 291-2988. Seniors attending the event also will receive two batteries, a phone charger and instructions. Northbrook residents can donate old and unwanted cell phones to the Senior Center during regular business hours to be used for the program. DIABETIC SHOE CLINIC (Ref:# 0320-6) The Northbrook Park District Senior Center will present a shoe clinic for diabetics and their families on Friday, April 11 at 10am at 3323 Walters Avenue. The Step Lightly clinic will discuss the importance of proper foot care and display an assortment of shoes and inserts designed for diabetics. Medicare covers one pair of therapeutic shoes per year, and the benefit will be explained. Participants can have their feet measured and fill out the appropriate paperwork to be sent to their doctors for prescription approval. SIT AND BE FIT CLASS (Ref:# 0320-7) Seniors can enjoy an active workout while seated in a new Sit and Be Fit class, beginning Wednesday, April 9 at 1pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Participants can increase their range of motion, tone their muscles, help control their weight and maintain flexibility while listening to musical favorites. The fee is $12 for 12 sessions. BABYSITTING CLASSES (Ref:# 0320-9) Children ages 11 and older can learn the proper techniques for babysitting in a series of two Saturday classes from the Northbrook Park District, on April 5 and 12 from 1-5:30pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Certified Red Cross instructors will teach the course, which covers infant care, basic first aid and emergency situations. Students who complete both classes will receive certification. CPR CLASSES (Ref:# 0320-10) Teenagers and preteens can learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a new class on April 5, from 9am-Noon at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Ave. Participants who successfully complete the class will receive a 1-year certification in CPR (infant, child and adult) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) usage. Enrollment is limited to 12 students. The fee is $20 for Northbrook Park District residents and $25 for nonresidents. FIT 4 KIDS (Ref:# 0320-12) Noodle tag, mousetrap and gladiator are some of the games young children can enjoy in a new class called Fit 4 Kids on Monday afternoons, beginning March 31 at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The program combines fitness and fun for ages 3-5 in an hour-long program, from 1:30-2:30pm. The fee for 8 sessions is $104 for Northbrook Park District residents and $130 for nonresidents. PASSPORT PALS (Ref:# 0320-13) Young children can “travel” the world each week with Passport Pals, a new class that will explore world cultures, traditions and languages through activities, songs, treats and games. Designed for ages 4-6, classes are offered on Wednesdays from 11:30am-12:45pm and Thursdays from 9-11am, beginning on April 2 and 3, at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Wednesday participants should bring lunch to class. The fee for seven Wednesday classes is $98 for Northbrook Park District residents and $123 for nonresidents. KNITTING FOR CHILDREN (Ref:# 0320-14) Children can learn how to knit in a new program on Tuesday nights from 7-8pm, beginning April 1 at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The classes are designed for ages 8 and up. The fee for eight classes is $96 for Northbrook Park District residents and $101 for nonresidents. Students will need to bring the following items to class: a skein of light colored, worsted-weight yarn and a pair of size 8 knitting needles or H or I hook for crocheting.
