NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HIRED
(Ref:# 0300-1) The Northbrook Park District Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce that Richard (Rick) Hanetho, CPRP, will join the Northbrook Park District as Executive Director on April 1, 2008. Hanetho currently serves as Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Operations for the Carol Stream Park District and brings more than 20 years of experience in recreation management in two award-winning park districts
―Carol Stream and Schaumburg. He’ll replace Ed Harvey, who is retiring after 20 years of service with the Northbrook Park District, including 11 years as Executive Director.

As the Chief Executive of the Park District, the Executive Director reports to the seven-member elected Board of Commissioners and is responsible for managing and operating all parks, programs and facilities. Those include the Leisure Center, Senior Center, Northbrook Theatre, Sportsman’s Country Club, Village Green Center, Ed Rudolph Velodrome, Meadowhill Aquatic Center and the Northbrook Sports Center ice rinks and outdoor swimming pool, in addition to ball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts and trails. The Director also leads an organization of about 65 full-time employees and about 500 part-time and seasonal workers.

With the help of public management consultants, the Board of Commissioners searched for a new Executive Director on a local, regional and nationwide basis. After reviewing qualified candidates and conducting extensive interviews, the Board decided to offer the job to Hanetho, based on “his experience, leadership abilities and his commitment to assuring the Park District delivers the highest level of services to the community.” Hanetho graduated from Southern Illinois University with a B.S. degree in Recreation Administration and lives in Schaumburg.

In the past 40 years, there have been only two Executive Directors of the Northbrook Park District. ###

PARK DISTRICT RECEIVES SAFETY AWARD
(Ref:# 0313-1) The Northbr
ook Park District has received the highest loss control award―accreditation―from the Park District Risk Management Agency, known as PDRMA. Created as an alternative to commercial insurance, the Illinois organization combines the resources of park and recreation agencies to develop risk management and loss control programs, purchase insurance, pay losses and defend lawsuits brought against the members.

Through a loss control review process, the Park District was evaluated in areas such as: written policies and procedures, loss experience, property management, human resources, and training and orientation. Specific operations also were reviewed, including aquatics, golf, athletics and ice rink management. The accreditation signifies excellence in risk management programs and their implementation. Along with accreditation, the Northbrook Park District receives a $1,500 cash award and a recognition plaque.

The cash award is used in part to recognize employees who have performed their duties in a safe manner and met the criteria for an in-house Safety Award, established by the Risk Management Committee. The Northbrook Park District is committed to providing a safe environment for employees and patrons who participate in programs and use park facilities. ###
