FISHING WITHOUT A LICENSE
(Ref:# 0607-1) If you want to try your luck fishing, you don’t need a license this weekend at Lake Shermerville in Wood Oaks Green or the pond at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. Every summer, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources waives the need for a fishing license for four days. This year, the dates are June 8-11. Grab your rod or use one of ours and see what you can catch. The hours for fishing are sunrise to sunset, and there’s no need to register. Rods and tackle from Access to Fishing are available free of charge at the Leisure Center. All ages are welcome. For more information, call (847) 291-2995. ###

NATURE AT NIGHT
(Ref:# 0607-2) Come to the Trail Through Time on June 13 or June 20, for exciting discoveries and outdoor adventures with the Northbrook Park District. Environmentalist Julie Hansen will lead a group from 4-5pm on the Trail, at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. On June 13, students can learn how to predict the weather and which way the winds blow on the prairie. The program on June 20 will explore life on the prairie in the 1840s through games and a reenactment at the sod schoolhouse. The programs are designed for children ages 7-10. TREASURES, TRINKETS AND TRASH
(Ref:# 0607-3) Come to the Leisure Center this weekend for Treasures, Trinkets and Trash, a yearly market from the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. The hours on Friday are 9am-5pm, and Saturday hours are 9am-2pm. There will be a separate area for new handcrafted items, and lunch will be available both days. KIDS FLEA MARKET
(Ref:# 0607-4) June 9 is the deadline to register for the annual Kids Flea Market, which will open for business on Saturday, June 23, immediately following Kids Fest in Village Green. Young entrepreneurs can set up shop, selling their old games, toys, books and collectibles. The kids are the bosses here, pricing and selling the merchandise and running their own booths. The sellers will be charged $5 for a table, and the young businessmen and businesswomen must be in grades 1-7. Bicycles, clothing and large items are not allowed in the marketplace. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at
www.nbparks.org. The Northbrook Arts Commission will have a tie-dye booth at the event. ###

FRIDAY NIGHT BIKE RACES
(Ref:# 0607-5) Experience the excitement of bicycle racing on Friday nights in Northbrook, beginning June 8 at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome. Riders age 5 and up are welcome to race around the banked bike track. Prizes will be awarded to all riders less than 14 years old. Young riders will race first, from 7-8pm, and adults will race from 8:20-10pm. The entry fee is $6 per person for non-licensed racers, and Northbrook residents pay a discounted fee. There will be separate events for each age group, and track bikes and road bikes will race in separate events. One of only a few official quarter-mile bike tracks in the country, the Velodrome attracts top cyclists from the Midwest to weekly races on Thursday nights and also offers training sessions and special events. Northbrook residents can use the track when it is not reserved for races or training. The Velodrome is located at 1479 Maple Avenue in Meadowhill Park. TWO-DAY GOLF FESTIVAL
(Ref:# 0607-6) Got golf? For a look at all things golf, swing by Sportsman’s Country Club on June 16 or June 17 for the
Golf Digest and Golf World Experience Tour. The two-day festival will feature daily demo opportunities, product sampling from leading manufacturers, lifestyle expos, contests and more. The festival hours are 9am to 4pm both days, and admission is free. Surround yourself with the latest news and products from the world of golf, and check out the new look of Sportsman’s Country Club, which is celebrating its 75th Anniversary and Grand Reopening on Friday, June 22. The classic 18-hole golf course has been rebuilt to update the design and quality and to provide a more enjoyable game of strategy and skill. The renovation project consisted of regrassing and regrading all the greens, rebuilding and relocating bunkers and changing the fairway contours. Sportsman’s facilities also include a separate nine-hole course, a lighted driving range, a miniature golf course, four putting greens, a golf shop and a clubhouse dining room serving breakfast and lunch. NORTHBROOK CHOIR TO SING IN D.C.
(Ref:# 0607-7) About 20 members of the Northbrook-based Y’All Come Choir will sing at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. at the invitation of Dr. John Leavitt, an award-winning composer and guest conductor. They will participate in a world premiere performance of Dr. Leavitt's "Jubilee" on Sunday afternoon, June 17th.  Also included in the program is "Set Me as a Seal", a piece composed specifically for the "Y'All Come" choir in 2003. Participating members are: Colleen A. Aronson, Ronald Hadsall, Linnea Read-Boyev, Robert Weisman, Hilary Weisman, Susan Kaye, Laurie Geiger, Janet Gross, Maureen Morrissey, Colleen Moeller, Nancy Medin, Barbara Noeth, Bev Lavitt, Mark Damisch, Judy Hughes, Sandy Spangenberger, Priscilla Merrick, and Sue Young, choir founder and director. The Y’All Come Choir is affiliated with the Northbrook Park District, and new members are welcome to join at any time. For more information, call (847)291-2960, ext. 165.  ###

KIDS FEST JUNE 23
(Ref:# 0607-8) The award-winning recording artist and educator Nelson Gill will perform at Kids Fest on Saturday, June 23, bringing the hot sounds of Caribbean reggae and calypso to the Village Green. Born in Belize and educated in Chicago, Gill was a preschool teacher who began singing to help soothe his students. He has recorded several albums and performed at Ravinia Festival and Navy Pier, in addition to locations throughout the United States, Central America and the Caribbean. Bring a blanket or chairs and the children to the park for this free event from 10:30 to 11:30am. The upbeat songs will keep the children dancing, and the lyrics contain positive messages about friendship, perseverance and multi-cultural understanding. The concert is open to all ages.  ###

(Ref:# 0607-9) Pool hours for the Summer Season begin on June 9. The Northbrook Park District operates two outdoor swimming pool facilities – Meadowhill Aquatic Center and the Sports Center Pool at West Park. The summer hours, from June 9-August 11, are as follows:

Sports Center Pool, Monday-Friday Schedule:

The Sports Center Pool includes a large open water swim area, two drop slides, a zero-depth area with interactive water toys, a 1-meter diving board and locker rooms. Meadowhill Aquatic Center consists of four separate pools, including a general lap swim and activity pool, a diving well with three boards, a zero-depth entry children’s activity area and a tube slide and body slide, in addition to a large sun deck area and a full-service concession stand. The Park District offers private and semi-private swim lessons, swim instruction for children and adults, scuba diving, diving lessons, a lifeguard class, water aerobics and pool parties during the summer. PARK FEST JUNE 12 & RUBBER DUCK RACE
(Ref:# 0607-10) The sounds of soul, blues, disco, gospel and good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll will rock the Village Green in Northbrook on June 12, as singer Shirley King takes the stage at the Park Fest concert series. The daughter of the legendary B.B. King, Shirley began singing in a church choir at age nine. She and her band specialize in high-energy blues and soul, from traditions to originals. The concert will start immediately following the Northbrook Rotary Riverchance Rubber Duck Race, which begins at 7:15pm. Tickets for the race will be sold prior to the race on the 12th. Bring your friends and family for an exciting night of music in the park. Village Green is located at Shermer and Meadow, in downtown Northbrook. Park Fest is sponsored by Barbara Byrne and Kati Spaniak of Prudential Preferred Properties in Northbrook, in partnership with the Northbrook Park District. LINE DANCING WITH COUNTRY BERNIE
(Ref:# 0607-11) Step right up for line dancing classes from the Northbrook Park District, beginning June 14. You can get your toes tappin’ and dance like a pro in six weeks. Instructor “Country Bernie” will guide dancers in six classes on Thursday nights, from 7-8pm at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The fee is $38 for members and $48 for non-members.
