NOTICE OF PUBLIC INPUT MEETING
(Ref:# 0605-1) On Thursday, June 12, the Northbrook Park District will hold a public input meeting regarding a proposed new park. Residents are invited to attend the meeting at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road, beginning at 6pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. The proposed park location is in an area bordered by Techny Road on the north, Willow Road on the south, Pfingsten Road on the east and Landwehr Road on the west. Anyone who is unable to attend the meeting and has questions or comments can contact Northbrook Park District Executive Director Rick Hanetho or Parks and Properties Director Phil Yoder at (847) 291-2960. PARK FEST BEGINS
(Ref:# 0605-1) Get ready to sit back, relax and enjoy the sound of music in the park, as Park Fest opens for the season on June 10 in downtown Northbrook with the Big Band sound of the Alan Gresik Swing Shift Orchestra. Returning to the concert series this summer is the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition, a friendly contest to find the best amateur singer in Northbrook. The semi-finals will begin on June 17. All Park Fest concerts begin at 7:30pm at the Village Green, located at Shermer and Meadow, and food will be available from area restaurants beginning at 6:30pm on concert evenings. KIDDIE COMBO CAMP
(Ref:# 0605-2) Sports, art, music and science combine for preschool enrichment in Kiddie Combo Camp, a new summer program from the Northbrook Park District that begins on June 23. Participants will be together on the first day and then separated into three smaller groups. Designed for ages 3-4, the camp will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:15-11:30am. The fee for the first session is $181 for Northbrook Park District residents and $226 for nonresidents. A second session will begin on July 21. PICNIC PERMITS
(Ref:# 0605-3) Planning a picnic? Three Northbrook parks offer shelters and scenic spots that can be reserved for picnics. Seven picnic areas can be reserved – two at Wood Oaks Green, four at Techny Prairie Park and Fields and the Gazebo at Village Green. Groups of 15 or less can use the picnic areas without a reservation on a first-come, first-served basis, but small groups can make a reservation to guarantee availability. Groups of 16 or more must reserve and pay a fee to use picnic areas. A picnic request form can be picked up at the Northbrook Park District Administrative Offices, 545 Academy Drive. SUMMER POOL HOURS
(Ref:# 0605-4) Get ready to take the plunge with summer swimming fun. June 7 is the opening date for the Northbrook Park District pools - Meadowhill Aquatic Center and the Northbrook Sports Center pool at West Park. Meadowhill offers four separate pools, including a general lap
swim and activity pool, a diving well, a zero-depth entry children’s water play area and two exciting slides―a body flume slide and inner tube slide. The Sports Center pool includes a large open swim area, two drop slides, a diving board and a zero-depth area with interactive water toys. You can find an easy-to-follow pool schedule on page 46 of the Spring/Summer Recreation Guide or online at www.nbparks.org. Season passes and punch cards are available for admission to the pools. The Park District also offers private and semi-private swim lessons, parent and tot aquatics, preschool swim lessons, swim instruction for ages 5-14, adult swim lessons, diving instruction, lifeguard training, scuba diving, water aerobics and pool parties. AUDITIONS FOR SINGING COMPETITION
(Ref:# 0605-5) All Northbrook residents are invited to audition for the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition, a friendly contest designed to showcase undiscovered local talent. Auditions will be held on June 7, starting at 3:30pm, at the Village Green Center, 1810 Walters Avenue. Contestants will choose the song and bring a CD or sheet music; the Park District will provide an accompanist.

On June 17 and 24, semifinalists will step up to the stage and perform at Park Fest concerts, with a winner chosen at the concert on July 1. The winner will be invited to ride in the 4th of July parade. Any Northbrook resident can audition, but contestants must register in advance. The singing competition is sponsored by Barbara Byrne and Kati Spaniak of Prudential Preferred Properties. SCUBA DIVING LESSONS
(Ref:# 0605-6) Swimmers can experience the underwater adventure of scuba diving this summer! The Northbrook Park District is offering a scuba diving class on Tuesday, June 17 for ages 8 and up. A Certified Master Diver will teach the basic skills, and all necessary equipment will be provided. The class runs from 7:30-9:30pm at the Northbrook Sports Center Pool on Pfingsten Road. The fee is $75 for Northbrook Park District residents and $94 for nonresidents. A second class will be offered on July 15 at the same time and price. NEW PARK DEDICATION
(Ref:# 0605-7) Food, face painting and giveaways are part of the official dedication of Greenview Park, the newest park in the Northbrook Park District, on Sunday, June 8 from 1-3pm. The Park District Board of Commissioners will welcome visitors to the 1.88-acre park at 2407 Greenview Road, north of Willow Road and east of Pfingsten. The park contains a playground, multi-use path with fitness stations, half-court basketball, gazebo and interpretive trail with signs. Neighbors, elected officials and Park District staff worked together to acquire and develop the site. The Park District received a grant of $627,000 from the state of Illinois to help buy the land and a second grant of $245,500 to help develop the property.  ###

SENIOR TAX HELP
(Ref:# 0605-8) Seniors and veterans can get free help with taxes on June 10 from 9am to 1pm at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. People who received at least $3,000 of Social Security, Railroad Retirement or Veterans’ benefits in 2007 are eligible to receive a $300 stimulus payment, but they need to file an income tax form first. Representatives from the Center for Economic Progress will help file the forms. Call the Senior Center for an appointment at (847) 291-2988 and find out what to bring. ###

INTRO TO TRACK BIKE RACING
(Ref:# 0605-9) Students who want to experience the thrill of high-speed cycling can sign up for an eight-week introduction to track bike racing that begins June 9 at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome. The program will include bike fit and handling, racing strategies, team and group riding and competitive racing. Each participant will have two days of instruction per week, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45-5:45pm. The program is designed for children in grades 7-12, who will need to bring helmet and proper cycling clothes and shoes. Track bikes will be provided, or participants can bring their own. The fee for 16 classes is $175 for Northbrook Park District residents and $200 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations or online at www.nbparks.org. KIDS FEST AND FLEA MARKET
(Ref:# 0605-10) On Saturday, June 21, the award-winning recording artist and educator Nelson Gill will perform at Kids Fest from 10:30-11:30am, bringing the sounds of Caribbean reggae and calypso to the Village Green in downtown Northbrook. His lyrics contain positive messages about friendship, perseverance and multi-cultural understanding. The concert is free and open to all ages. After the show, the Kids Only Flea Market will open for business as children entering grades 1-7 can sell games, toys, collectibles and jewelry until 2pm. GOLF FESTIVAL
(Ref:# 0605-11) Sportsman’s Country Club will host the Golf Digest Experience Tour 2008 on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 from 9am-4pm. The two-day event will showcase golf’s leading manufacturers and lifestyle exhibitors with equipment for people to try. Admission is free and open to the public.  Manufacturers expected to be represented are: Adidas, Aldila, Bobby Jones, Callaway Golf, Cleveland Golf, Cobra, Lamkin, Mizuno, Nike Golf, Oakley, Ping, Srixon, Taylor Made, and Yonex.  Sportsman’s is one of five locations in the United States chosen to host the golf festival this year.  CANCER AWARENESS CONCERT
(Ref:# 0605-12 ) Two years in the planning, an unusual event will spread a musical message of hope this weekend. The Y’All Come Choir will perform Sing For The Cure®, A Proclamation of Hope, in conjunction with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, on Saturday, June 7 at 7:30pm and Sunday, June 8 at 3pm at the Northbrook Theatre, 3323 Walters Avenue, Northbrook. 

Sing for the Cure is a musical journey through one woman's battle with breast cancer. The performances include a full orchestra and guest narrators - Melissa Forman of WLIT Radio, and Kathy O'Malley of WGN Radio's "Kathy and Judy Show." The soloists and featured singers, all members of the choir, are: Beth Bassler, Ken Hudson, Rita O'Connor, Michael Gail, Lisa Kim, Harriet Snyder, Laurie Geiger, Colleen Aronson and Priscilla Merrick.

Tickets can be purchased through the Northbrook Park District Performing Arts Office at (847) 291-2367 and online at www.northbrooktheatre.org. FISHING – NO LICENSE NEEDED
(Ref:# 0605-14) If you ever wanted to try fishing, now is your chance. On June 13, 14 and 15,
all ages can fish without a license in the state of Illinois. The Northbrook Park District has two locations for fishing―Lake Shermerville in Wood Oaks Green, 1150 Sanders Road, and the pond at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road. Bring your rod or use one of ours from Access to Fishing, located at Techny Prairie Center. Fishing is available from sunrise to sunset, and there’s no need to register. SUMMER DRAMA WORKSHOPS
(Ref:# 0605-15) The Northbrook Park District is accepting registration for Summer Drama Workshops for children in grades 1-10. Campers will attend professionally led classes in all aspects of theatre, culminating in a final performance. Beginning on June 15, the Babes on Broadway Workshop offers daily classes in singing, dancing and acting for students entering grades 1-2. The Creative Drama Workshop begins June 23 for students in grades 3-5, with scenery, costumes, makeup and props supporting the creative efforts. Children in grades 6-10 can study all aspects of the theatre, both on stage and behind the scenes, with the Theatre Arts Workshop, beginning June 16 under the direction of Northbrook Theatre Artistic Director Gregory Dennhardt. The workshops include field trips and outdoor activities. The Northbrook Park District offers two sessions of each workshop during the summer, and extended care is available.
