HOLIDAY SCHEDULE (Ref:# 0628-1) Northbrook Park District classes and camps will not meet on Wednesday, July 4, due to the holiday. All Park District Registration and Administration offices will close as well. However, Park District camp staff will supervise family games at the Village Green from 9-11am, and the pools will be open to the public from Noon-6pm. Classes and camps will resume, and offices will reopen for business on Thursday, July 5. ###
CAMP DEADLINE (Ref:# 0628-2) There’s still time to sign up for summer camp fun with the Northbrook Park District. July 6 is the registration deadline for General Camps, session II. The Park District offers a wide assortment of camps, with well-trained and experienced staff. Campers can learn new skills and sports, make new friends and enjoy recreational experiences close to home. The choices include half days and full days, three or five days per week and extended care before and after camp. Campers also can extend the summer activities with Awesome August, a one-week camp program that ends August 17. PARK FEST JULY 3 (Ref:# 0628-3) The Park Fest summer concert series will offer a double bill of talent on July 3rd in Northbrook’s Village Green Park. The band Spoken Four will perform at 7:30pm, delivering a high-energy show, with a repertoire that combines rock ‘n’ roll, classic rock, soul, Motown, R&B and today’s hits. Before the concert, the finals of the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition will take place at 6:30pm. The friendly contest, returning for a second year, showcases local talent and will determine the best undiscovered singer in Northbrook. Visitors can bring blankets and lawn chairs for an exciting evening of music in the park, and food service will begin at 6:30pm at the Village Green, located at Shermer and Meadow in downtown Northbrook. The singing competition and Park Fest are brought to you by Barbara Byrne and Kati Spaniak of Prudential Preferred Properties in Northbrook, in partnership with the Northbrook Park District. SENIOR OLYMPICS (Ref:# 0628-5) Adults in Northbrook are invited to compete in a six-county Senior Olympics from July 13 through July 20. Hosted by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association, the event will include golf, tennis, bowling, biking, track and field, horseshoes, bocce and volleyball. The competition is open to athletes of all abilities, ages 50 and over, and will take place in Park Ridge and neighboring communities. All participants will receive a 2007 Senior Olympics T-shirt, and medals will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each age/gender category. SENIOR TRIPS (Ref:# 0628-8) A day at the races, music under the stars, a visit to one of the largest casinos in the country and two cruises are among the many trips coming up with the Northbrook Senior Center. Wednesday, July 11, the Center will take a group to Arlington Park Race Track for a day of thoroughbred racing. The trip includes admission, reserved box seats under the roof, a Daily Racing Guide, lunch and a $5 betting voucher. An unforgettable evening is planned on Monday, July 30, with a trip to hear Natalie Cole sing at Ravinia Festival. On Wednesday, August 22, an Odyssey cruise on Lake Michigan includes lunch, dancing to a live band and the attractions of Navy Pier. A two-night trip begins Sunday, August 26 to the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort on an Indiana reservation near Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. That trip also includes a stop in the quaint town of Saugatuck. SCUBA DIVING (Ref:# 0628-9) Swimmers can experience the underwater adventure of scuba diving this summer with the Northbrook Park District, in a new class on July 17, for ages 8 and up. A Certified Master Diver will teach the basic fundamentals of scuba diving, and all necessary equipment will be provided. The class runs from 7:30-9:30pm at the Sports Center pool on Pfingsten Road. HIGH-TECH TREASURE HUNT (Ref:# 0628-10) Children can enjoy an outdoor, high-tech treasure hunt with the help of a new program called “Adventures with GPS Receivers.” Students will learn basic orienteering and geocaching, an entertaining, outdoor adventure using Global Positioning Satellites. The Northbrook Park District will offer a series of six classes on Thursday afternoons from 4-5pm, beginning on September 20. Students will set out on a “geo-safari” and learn to locate geocaches online and create their own adventures. The program is designed for children ages 8 and up; the fee for six classes is $128 for residents and $133 for non-residents.
