CONCRETE RODEO (Ref:# 0614-P1) Get ready for an exciting competition with some fancy footwork! On Tuesday, June 19, the Northbrook Park District will host a skateboarding contest at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. The Concrete Rodeo, a national skateboard tour, will roll into the Northbrook skate park and conduct a competition between 11am and 6pm, with eight age groups for skaters, as well as male and female divisions. The age groups are: 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, 19-26, and 27 and above. The top three winners in each group will receive prizes, in addition to an invitation to a final competition in Portland, Oregon in August. IMPORTANT CAMP DATES (Ref:# 0614-1) There’s still time to sign up for summer camp fun with the Northbrook Park District. July 6 is the registration deadline for General Camps, session II. The Park District offers a wide assortment of new and returning camps this summer, with well-trained and experienced staff. Campers can learn new skills and sports, make new friends and enjoy recreational experiences close to home. The choices include half days and full days, three or five days per week and extended care before and after camp. Campers can extend the summer with Awesome August, a one-week camp program that ends August 17. June 22 is the deadline to request a refund for Session II camp. SINGING COMPETITION BEGINS (Ref:# 0614-2) On June 19, music lovers can hear a big country band in downtown Northbrook and enjoy a homegrown talent competition, as part of the Park Fest summer concert series. Country Sky Band will deliver a high-energy show featuring current and past country music hits at the Village Green, beginning at 7:30pm. Before the concert, you can hear four talented singers from Northbrook – Dan Ermel, Paul Yost, Erika Turner and Shannon Nebolsky. They’re semifinalists in the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition, a contest designed to find the best amateur singer in Northbrook. The singing competition starts at 6:30pm, and food service in the park also starts at 6:30. Four other semi-finalists - Melanie Vitaterna, Cara McKay, Carl Moss and Michael Hall – will compete on June 26, also at 6:30pm at the Village Green. The winners from those two nights will advance to the finals before Park Fest on July 3. The Village Green is located at Shermer and Meadow in downtown Northbrook. NATURE AT NIGHT (Ref:# 0614-3) On June 20, children can enjoy an outdoor adventure with the Northbrook Park District, exploring life on the prairie in the 1840s through games and a reenactment at the Trail Through Time. Environmentalist Julie Hansen will lead a group from 4-5pm on the Trail, at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. The program is designed for children ages 7-10, and the fee is $5 for Park District residents and $9 for non-residents. SENIOR OLYMPICS (Ref:# 0614-4) It’s a six-county showdown. The Illinois Park and Recreation Association will host a Senior Olympics July 13 through July 20, for athletes of all abilities, ages 50 and over. The events include golf, tennis, bowling, biking, track and field, horseshoes, bocce and volleyball. The competition will take place in Park Ridge and neighboring communities. All participants will receive a 2007 Senior Olympics T-shirt, and medals will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each age/gender category. PRESCHOOL ADDS AFTERNOON CLASSES (Ref:# 0614-5) The popular Sunshine Preschool is adding afternoon classes for children ages 4 and 5 during the next school year. The classes will meet four times a week, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:45-3pm, beginning in September. Sunshine Preschool, managed by the Northbrook Park District, has a “learning through play” philosophy. Teachers use songs, stories and daily projects to deliver their lessons and focus on the individual students with a very caring approach. The children develop educational and social skills while enjoying arts and crafts, music, science and community-based field trips.
Because classes are held at the Leisure Center, students are able to enjoy plays at the Northbrook Theatre, create projects in the ceramics studio, cook in the kitchen, take nature walks and play games in the gym. They also can benefit from intergenerational activities, such as trick-or-treating at the Senior Center and watching the Park Larks practice their singing. Sunshine Preschool provides a warm and comfortable introduction to school, and the schedule follows the local school district’s calendar. CANOE RENTALS (Ref:# 0614-6) Enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the water with a canoe from the Northbrook Park District. Adults over the age of 21 can rent canoes year-round, as weather permits. Reservations can be made up to five months in advance but must be made at least 48 hours before the rental. Rentals are available Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 3pm at the Maintenance Facility, 545 Academy Drive, and trailers are available. TEAMS CHALLENGE COURSE (Ref:# 0614-7) Are you ready for a challenge? Corporate groups, school groups and community organizations can sign up for the Northbrook Park District's Teams Challenge Course, a series of outdoor activities, trust initiatives and team-building adventures in Meadowhill Park. Guided by trained facilitators, participants can develop leadership and problem-solving skills and learn about cooperation and communication by sharing ideas and overcoming obstacles. The facilitators customize each program to meet the specific needs of the group and also can bring a challenge program to a different location. LINE DANCING WITH COUNTRY BERNIE (Ref:# 0614-8) Step right up for line dancing classes from the Northbrook Park District, beginning June 14. You can get your toes tappin’ and dance like a pro in six weeks. Instructor “Country Bernie” will guide dancers in six classes on Thursday nights, from 7-8pm at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The fee is $38 for members and $48 for non-members. GOLF FESTIVAL/GRAND REOPENING (Ref:# 0614-9) Got golf? Swing by Sportsman’s Country Club on June 16 or June 17 for the Golf Digest and Golf World Experience Tour. The two-day festival will feature daily demo opportunities, product sampling from leading manufacturers, lifestyle expos, contests and more. The festival hours are 9am to 4pm both days, and admission is free. Surround yourself with the latest news and products from the world of golf and check out the new look of Sportsman’s Country Club, which is celebrating its 75th Anniversary and Grand Reopening on Friday, June 22. The classic 18-hole golf course has been rebuilt to update the design and quality and to provide a more enjoyable game of strategy and skill. The renovation project consisted of regrassing and regrading all the greens, rebuilding and relocating bunkers and changing the fairway contours. SUDOKU STRATEGY JULY 10 (Ref:# 0614-10) Still puzzled by Sudoku? You can learn to solve the Japanese-designed number puzzles in a class from the Northbrook Park District Senior Center on July 10. Instructor Om Johari will teach a few simple techniques to solve all but the hardest puzzles; no math or guesswork is required. Observation and logic are the keys to solving the puzzles, which can help sharpen the mind and relieve stress. The class will be held from 10-11:15am at the Senior Center; the fee is $7 for members and $12 for non-members. The instructor will continue with coaching classes for those who are interested.
