EXPANDED HOURS FOR BATTING CAGES (Ref:# 0612-1) The batting cages at Techny Prairie Park and Field will swing into expanded hours of operation on June 16. The summer hours are: Noon-10pm Monday-Friday and 10am-10pm on weekends. Six batting cages are available, and players can choose to swing at baseballs or 12" softballs, for a fee of $1 for 12 pitches. Helmets are provided at no cost. Groups and teams also can reserve the cages in 30-minute intervals. For more information or to reserve the cages, call (847) 291-2369.   ###

KIDS KORNER OPEN HOUSE
(Ref:# 0612-2) An open house for Kids Korner Camp will be held on Friday, June 20, from 1-2:30pm at the camp site - Hickory Point School, 500 Laburnum Drive in Northbrook. Camp staff will be present to introduce themselves and to answer questions about the half-day camp for preschoolers. Parents and children are invited to attend the open house for Session I. An open house for Kids Korner, Session II will be held on Friday, July 18, from 3-4pm. There will be no camp on July 4.  ###

FISHING – NO LICENSE NEEDED
(Ref:# 0612-3) All ages can enjoy fishing, without a license, from sunrise to sunset, on June 13, 14 and 15. The Northbrook Park District has two locations for fishing―Lake Shermerville in Wood Oaks Green, 1150 Sanders Road, and the pond at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road. Bring your rod or use one of ours from Access to Fishing, located at Techny Prairie Center; there’s no need to register. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources waives the need for a fishing license for three days each summer, so try your luck. AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM
(Ref:# 0612-4) On June 16 and 17, adults can refresh their driving skills with a two-day class at the Northbrook Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Geared to drivers age 50 and over, the AARP Driver Safety Program consists of two four-hour sessions, from 9am-1pm both days, with a trained State of Illinois Driver Safety Program instructor. The fee is $10 to cover materials. Any licensed driver may attend, regardless of age, but class size is limited. To register or get more information, call (847) 291-2988. ###

 PARK FEST JUNE 17
(Ref:# 0612-5) On June 17, music lovers can enjoy a double treat in downtown Northbrook: a Park Fest concert and a homegrown talent competition. Beginning at 7:30pm, Mr. Myers will perform at the Village Green, blending the tropical sounds of calypso and ska, the rhythms of reggae and rock-and roll. This entertaining group has a unique style of island music known as Caribbean Rock. At 6:30pm, talented singers from Northbrook will compete as semifinalists in the iLoveNorthbrook Singing Competition, a contest designed to find the best amateur singer in town. Food service at the park also will begin at 6:30pm. The Village Green is located at Shermer and Meadow; in the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The sponsors of the singing competition and Park Fest for June 17, June 24 and July 1 are Barbara Byrne and Kati Spaniak of Prudential Preferred Properties. SCUBA DIVING LESSONS
(Ref:# 0612-6) Swimmers can experience the underwater adventure of scuba diving this summer, when the Northbrook Park District offers a scuba diving class on Tuesday, June 17 for ages 8 and up. A Certified Master Diver will teach the basic skills, and all necessary equipment will be provided. The class runs from 7:30-9:30pm at the Northbrook Sports Center Pool on Pfingsten Road. The fee is $75 for Northbrook Park District residents and $94 for non-residents. A second class will be offered on July 15 at the same time and price. CHAMBER GOLF OUTING
(Ref:# 0612-7) On Friday, June 13, Sportsman’s Country Club will host the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s annual Golf Outing. Funds raised at the day-long event will help support the Chamber’s programs and services; more than 250 area business and civic leaders are expected to attend. Anyone who wants to support the event by volunteering or playing golf can call (847) 498-5555. ###

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
(Ref:# 0612-8) Volunteers are needed to help with Art in the Park―A Northbrook Fine Arts Festival, scheduled for July 12 and 13 at the Village Green. Presented by the Northbrook Arts Commission, Northbrook Park District and Village of Northbrook, the two-day event will feature juried artists, nonstop musical entertainment, a community art project, children’s art activities and a silent auction. The hours are 10am-5pm on Saturday, July 12 and 11am-5pm on Sunday, July 13. Volunteers should contact the Northbrook Arts Commission at (847) 272-5050, extension 4226.  ###

SENIOR TRIP TO BRANSON
(Ref:# 0612-9) The Northbrook Park District Senior Center is accepting reservations for a five-day trip in October to Branson, Missouri, voted the #1 destination among motor coach travelers in the United States. The Branson Landing Autumn Spectacular will begin on October 17 and combine spectacular views, guided tours, shopping, dining and entertainment. The shows include the Twelve Irish Tenors, comedian Yakov Smirnoff, Legends in Concert, violinist Shoji Tabuchi, Brett Family Singers and Baldknobbers Jamboree. SKATEBOARD CAMPS
(Ref:# 0612-10) Skateboard camps for beginners and intermediate skaters will begin on June 16, with separate classes offered for ages 5-7 and 8-13 at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road. For the younger group, camp will meet Mondays through Thursdays from 9-10am for eight weeks. The older skaters will meet Mondays through Thursdays from 10am to Noon for four weeks. Additional sessions will begin on June 23, July 14, July 21, July 28 and August 4. All participants should have a skateboard. Sessions are $100 for Northbrook Park District residents and $125 for non-residents, and registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org.
