FLICK-N-FLOAT (Ref:# 0712-1) The feature film “Goonies” will be shown on Friday, July 13 at 8:30pm or sunset at the Meadowhill Aquatic Center in Meadowhill Park, 1501 Maple Avenue. The highly-entertaining PG-rated story follows a group of children who embark on a wild adventure after finding a pirate treasure map. The free movie event is co-sponsored by the Northbrook Park District and Thometz & Uhland Orthodontics. Children can watch the movie or swim in the pool or do both. Anyone 15 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Only the main pool will be open during this time, and snacks will be available for purchase. PARK FEST JULY 17 (Ref:# 0712-2) The tropical sounds of calypso and ska, the rhythms of reggae and some rock-n-roll will fill the Village Green on July 17, when Mr. Myers performs at the Park Fest concert series in downtown Northbrook. This entertaining group has a unique style of music - Caribbean Rock - with the distinctive sound of authentic steel drums. The concert begins at 7:30pm, and food service at the park will begin at 6:30pm. The Village Green is located at Shermer and Meadow; in the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. COSMIC SKATING (Ref:# 0712-3) Ice skaters can beat the heat this summer with a cool evening of cosmic skating in Northbrook. Every Friday night, the Northbrook Sports Center dazzles visitors with cosmic skating from 8-10pm. The evenings feature a professional DJ with music, special lighting and games. This is a good chance to get together with friends or make new ones and enjoy evening entertainment while chilling on the ice. Regular skating prices will apply, and everyone is welcome. FREE GOLF FOR GIRLS (Ref:# 0712-4) Take the girls out for golf! The Northbrook Park District golf courses are participating in the 8th annual "Take Your Daughter to the Course Week" from July 9-15. Girls up to the age of 17 will receive free green fees at Sportsman’s Country Club and the Anetsberger Golf Course when accompanied by a paying adult. The offer is valid anytime at Anetsberger and the East Nine, after 11am weekdays and after Noon on weekends at Sportsman’s Classic 18-hole Course. Daughters, granddaughters, nieces and other girls are welcome, and junior loaner clubs are available at no cost. In addition, on July 15, the staff at Anetsberger will conduct a free golf clinic for girls from 2-3pm. The National Golf Course Owners Association sponsors the promotion as part of the PGA’s player development program. PRESCHOOL ADDS AFTERNOON CLASSES (Ref:# 0712-5) Thinking about preschool? The popular Sunshine Preschool is adding afternoon classes for children ages 4 and 5 during the next school year. The classes will meet four times a week, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:45-3pm, beginning in September. Managed by the Northbrook Park District, Sunshine Preschool has a “learning through play” philosophy. Teachers use songs, stories and daily projects to deliver their lessons and focus on individual students with a very caring approach. The children develop educational and social skills while enjoying arts and crafts, music, science and community-based field trips.
Because classes are held at the Leisure Center, students are able to enjoy plays at the Northbrook Theatre, create projects in the ceramics studio, cook in the kitchen, take nature walks and play games in the gym. They also can benefit from intergenerational activities, such as trick-or-treating at the Senior Center and watching the Park Larks practice their singing. Sunshine Preschool provides a warm and comfortable introduction to school, and the schedule follows the local school district’s calendar. TEAMS CHALLENGE COURSE (Ref:# 0712-6) Are you ready for a challenge? Can you handle the Incomplete Bridge, Squeeze Box or Nitro’s Crossing? The Northbrook Park District is accepting applications for the Teams Challenge Course, a series of outdoor activities, trust initiatives and team-building adventures, designed to assist in personal and professional development. Corporate groups, school groups and community organizations can sign up for the course, which is in Meadowhill Park. Guided by trained facilitators, participants can develop leadership and problem-solving skills and learn about cooperation and communication while enjoying outdoor adventures and challenges. The facilitators customize each program to meet the specific needs of the group and also can bring a challenge program to a different location. SENIOR OLYMPICS (Ref:# 0712-7) A senior showdown is about to begin. Adults in Northbrook are invited to compete in a six-county Senior Olympics from July 13 through July 20. Hosted by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association, the event will include golf, tennis, bowling, biking, track and field, horseshoes, bocce and volleyball. The competition is open to athletes of all abilities, ages 50 and over, and will take place in Park Ridge and neighboring communities. All participants will receive a 2007 Senior Olympics T-shirt, and medals will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each age/gender category. GPS ADVENTURES (Ref:# 0712-8) A new program called “Adventures with GPS Receivers” will teach children basic orienteering and introduce them to Geo-Caching, an outdoor adventure hobby using Global Positioning Satellite devices. The Northbrook Park District will introduce a high-tech treasure hunt in a series of Thursday afternoon classes that start September 20 at the Leisure Center. Students will set out on a “geo-safari” and be able to blog about their adventures. The program is designed for ages 8 and up; the fee for six classes is $128 for residents and $133 for non-residents. DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM (Ref:# 0712-9) Adults can refresh their driving skills with a two-day class on July 16 and 17 at the Northbrook Senior Center. Geared to drivers age 50 and over, the AARP Driver Safety program consists of two four-hour sessions, covering much of the information needed to pass the Illinois license exam. The classes will run from 9am-1pm both days and will include a discussion of safer driver habits and deciding when to consider driver retirement. The class is taught by a trained State of Illinois Driver Safety Program instructor; the fee is $10 to cover materials. The Senior Center is located at 3323 Walters Avenue. GREAT SKATING GIVEAWAY (Ref:# 0712-10) Children who want to try ice skating can sign up for a free class, to be held on Saturday, August 11 at the Northbrook Sports Center. The Northbrook Park District will offer a free skating class on the ice for children ages 3-12 who have not taken lessons previously. The children will learn some of the basic skills of skating, and parents will learn how to dress children for indoor skating and how to lace skates properly. The class is designed for children who want to learn figure skating or hockey skills. Children will be grouped by age. Classes will be held from 1-1:30pm and 1:45-2:15pm. Registration is being taken on a first-come, first-served basis, because space is limited. SCUBA DIVING (Ref:# 0712-11) Swimmers can experience the underwater adventure of scuba diving this summer! The Northbrook Park District is offering a scuba diving class on July 17, for ages 8 and up. A Certified Master Diver will teach the basic skills, and all necessary equipment will be provided. The class runs from 7:30-9:30pm at the Sports Center pool on Pfingsten Road.
