WINTER CARNIVAL
(Ref:# 0103-1) Families can celebrate the season with a Winter Carnival at the Village Green on Saturday, January 5, from 11:30am-2:30pm. The annual event from the Northbrook Park District will feature horse-drawn wagon rides, ice sculpture demonstrations, games and giveaways, art projects, a bonfire and a chili cook-off. Judging for the cook-off will begin at 1pm, followed by the awarding of prizes and a public tasting. Food also will be available for purchase. CELL PHONE CLASSES
(Ref:# 0103-2) Adults can connect to the latest in cell phone technology, with a series of three classes from the Northbrook Park District, beginning on Thursday, February 7, called
How to Use Your Cell Phone. Participants should bring their cell phones and chargers to class and will learn how to store names and numbers, how to store and send pictures and how to use Blue Tooth technology, if applicable. Classes will be held from 9:30 to 11:30am at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The fee for three classes is $100 for Senior Center members and $110 for nonmembers. PUBLIC ICE SKATING
(Ref:# 0103-3) The Northbrook Sports Center has announced its winter schedule of public ice skating, beginning January 7. The schedule is as follows:

    Mornings
    Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 10:30am-Noon

    Afternoons
    Wednesday: 4-5:15pm
    Saturday: 4-5:15pm
    Sunday: 3-4:15pm

The fee for public skating is $5 per adult, $4 per youth and $2 per child under age 5. The Northbrook Park District provides rental skates for $3 per pair. Discounted coupon books are available for 10 admissions and discounted punch cards for 10 skate rentals. Private ice rentals also are available at hourly rates. KICKBOXING
(Ref:# 0103-4) Beginning on January 8, adults can get a taste of aerobics, western boxing and TaeKwonDo in a kickboxing fitness program, CARDIO-TKD, at the Oriental Arts Training Center, at 3141 Dundee Road. Classes will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-10:45am. The fee for 11 classes is $99 for Northbrook Park District residents and $124 for nonresidents. The program will introduce students to basic techniques, such as punching, kicking and defensive moves, while increasing flexibility and strengthening core muscle groups. DIGITAL CAMERA CLASSES
(Ref:# 0103-5) Adults can learn how to use digital cameras in a series of four classes, beginning on January 10 at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. The classes will be held on Thursdays, from 9:30-11:30am. Participants will learn to transfer pictures to a computer and adjust picture quality. Basic knowledge of the Windows 95, 98, ME or XP Operating System is a prerequisite. The fee for four classes is $120 for Senior Center members and $130 for nonmembers. PARK LARKS TO PERFORM
(Ref:# 0103-6) The Park Larks, a Northbrook Park District singing group, has two performances scheduled in January. On Wednesday, January 9, the group will sing at 1:30pm at Lieberman Geriatric Health Center, 9700 Gross Point Road in Skokie. And, on Wednesday, January 23, the singers will entertain at Brandel Care Center, 2155 Pfingsten Road in Northbrook, beginning at 2pm. Senior adults who enjoy Broadway show tunes are invited to join the group, which rehearses on Thursday mornings at the Northbrook Leisure Center, under the direction of former concert pianist Evelyn Binz. SUPER BOWL PARTY FOOD
(Ref:#0103-7) Adults can learn to prepare Super Bowl party food on Friday, January 25, as part of a new workshop series from the Northbrook Park District, called
“Dishin’ in the Kitchen.” From 6:30-9pm, participants will learn to prepare mozzarella stuffed breadsticks, beef satay, BBQ pulled chicken sandwiches, dip and two desserts. The class will be held at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue, and the

911 KID SAFETY CLASSES (Ref:# 0103-8) Preschoolers can learn safety strategies through the teachings of TaeKwonDo in a series of classes beginning on January 7 at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Designed for ages 3-5, the classes will be offered on Mondays from 11:45am to 12:20pm. Through the 911 Kid Safety Awareness Program, children will learn self-defense skills and learn how to be aware of their environment and react to dangerous or potentially dangerous situations. Parents are encouraged to attend the last class, on March 17, for a demonstration of the concepts and skills taught in the course. The fee for 10 classes is $120 for Northbrook Park District residents and $150 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations or online at www.nbparks.org. NIA CLASSES BEGIN
(Ref:# 0103-9) Beginning on January 7, adults and seniors can discover Nia, a worldwide fitness and wellness program, through classes with the Northbrook Park District. A form of fusion fitness, Nia combines movements from martial arts, dance and yoga into a low impact cardiovascular workout that focuses on achieving physical and spiritual health. Classes will be offered on Monday and Friday mornings from 9-10am at the Village Green, 1810 Walters Avenue. Designed for adults of any age or skill level, the classes can strengthen muscles, improve aerobic conditioning and relieve stress. The fee for six classes is $60 for Northbrook Park District residents and $75 for nonresidents; a drop-in option also is available for a fee of $12 per class. No prior movement experience is necessary. Nia stands for Neuromuscular Integrative Action. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. NEW SENIOR TRIPS
(Ref:# 0103-10) Walk-in registration begins on Tuesday, January 8 for new trips from the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. Seniors will have a chance to test their luck at the Potawatomi Casino in Milwaukee on February 13. On March 19, a group will head to Chicago to experience the unique entertainment of “Blue Man Group” at the Briar Street Theatre. Other upcoming trips include “Better Late” starring John Mahoney on April 30, “Avenue Q” on June 4 and “Barefoot in the Park” on June 26. The following trips have very limited availability:

    February 6: a visit to NBC-Towers to be part of the television program “In the Loop with l Village”

    February 27: a performance of “La Cage Aux Folles" in Munster, Indiana

    April 3: the madcap musical “Anything Goes” in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin

    April 8: “The Drowsy Chaperone” at Cadillac Palace in Chicago.

FIRESIDE ON THE TRAIL
(Ref:# 0103-11) On January 15, a school holiday, students can explore the prairie in winter, with a new program from the Northbrook Park District,
Fireside on the Trail. Students will cook s’mores over a campfire and look for signs of animal life on the Trail Through Time, in Techny Prairie Park and Fields. The program, from 3-4pm, is designed for children ages 8 and older. The fee is $7 for Northbrook Park District residents and $10 for nonresidents. CAFÉ AMIGOS
(Ref:# 0103-12) On January 18,
Café Amigos will open for business, allowing preschoolers to learn Spanish while lunching with friends. Theme days, songs, art and games are part of the new program from the Northbrook Park District for children who are 4 and 5. Children will bring a lunch and drink to the program, which is scheduled on Fridays from 11:30am to 1pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Children who attend Sunshine Preschool on Friday mornings can extend their day with the class. The cost of the nine-week program is $176 for Northbrook Park District residents and $181 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. BOPPIN’ TOTS
(Ref:# 0103-14) Young children can learn to ice skate and enjoy dancing at the same time, in a new series of classes from the Northbrook Park District, starting on January 10 and running through mid-April.
Boppin’ Tots and Boppin’ Basics will be offered on Thursdays, with separate classes for 3-year-olds and 4-to-5-year-olds. Classes will be taught at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. The fee for 15 classes is $158 for Northbrook Park District residents and $173 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE
(Ref:# 0103-15) It’s time to think about summer! Registration is about to begin for summer camps, workshops and clinics from the Northbrook Park District.
Beginning on June 23, the Park District will offer eight weeks of summer camp, packed with a wide range of activities, including swimming and sports, tie dying and talent shows, field trips and freeze-tag, and golf, tennis and art instruction. In addition to the general camps, summer options from the Northbrook Park District include athletic clinics and specialty camps, such as Ice Skating and Dance Camp, Performing Arts Workshops and the Junior Golf Development Series. Parents can choose full-day or half-day camps, three or five days per week and extended care before and after camp. The residents’ deadline for the camp lottery is January 31.
