SENIOR TRIPS
(Ref:# 0222-1) The Senior Center is offering exciting one-day getaway trips to popular attractions and theatre productions. The upcoming trips include:

    April 13 – Wayne Newton at the Genesee Theatre
    May 2 – “Fiddler on the Roof”
    June 6 – “The Color Purple”
    July 18 – “The Light in the Piazza”
    July 25 – “The Odd Couple” 
    August 8 – “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”
      and
    October 31 “Jersey Boys.”

Pickup and drop-off are at the Sports Center/West Park, 1730 Pfingsten Road. The trips always fill quickly. To find out about registration and space availability, call the Senior Center at (847) 291-2988.  ###

GOLF DISCOUNT DEADLINE
(Ref:# 0222-2) Don’t miss your chance for a great discount on golf at Sportsman’s Country Club. Northbrook Park District residents can apply until February 28 for Early Bird renewal of Resident Discount Cards, which entitle golfers to reduced green fees, advance tee time reservations and reduced practice facility fees. Discount card holders also qualify for reduced fees at the new Anetsberger Golf Course. The early fee for Resident Discount Cards is $25 until February 28, and the regular fee of $50 goes into effect on March 1. Cards can be purchased at Sportsman’s Golf Shop, and new applicants must present a valid photo ID and a current utility bill. Renewals can present a current card and a current utility bill. Children under the age of 12 must be assessed by one of the golf professionals. For more information, call the golf shop at (847) 291-2351, extension 3.  ###

HASSIDISM CLASS
(Ref:# 0222-3) The inside story of Hassidism, a type of Orthodox Judaism, will be the subject of two classes at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. Rabbi Meir Moscowitz from Lubavitch of Northbrook will teach the classes on March 15 and 22, from 1:15 to 2:15pm at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The classes will offer an overview of the philosophy and history of Hassidism. Advance registration is required, and the fee is $16 for Northbrook Park District residents and $26 for non-residents. BOARD MEETING FEBRUARY 28
(Ref:#0222-4) The Northbrook Park District Board of Commissioners will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, February 28 at 7pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The public is welcome to attend. Agendas for the monthly meetings are posted online at nbparks.org in the Board meeting section. ###

BASS FISHING WITH A PRO |
(Ref:# 0222-5) On March 28, catch an hour of fun and prizes with professional bass fisherman, Jim Hendee. He'll share his experience and answer questions about luring and landing the largest fish, in this enjoyable program, from 7-8pm at the Northbrook Park District Leisure Center. Students are admitted free to the event, which is recommended for ages 10 to adult. The fee for adults is $3 for Northbrook Park District residents and $5 for non-residents. SENIOR DRIVING SAFETY
(Ref:# 0222-6) Adults can refresh their driving skills with a two-day class on February 26 and 27 at the Northbrook Senior Center. Geared to drivers age 50 and over, the AARP Driver Safety program consists of two four-hour sessions, covering much of the information needed to pass the Illinois license exam. Completion of the class may entitle participants to a discount on their car insurance. The classes are scheduled for 8:30am to 12:30pm, and the Senior Center is located at 3323 Walters Avenue. The fee for the driver safety program is $10. Any licensed driver may attend. For more information, call (847) 291-2988. ###

OUTDOOR WINTER FUN
(Ref:#0222-7) Families can discover the beauty of the outdoors this winter with facilities from the Northbrook Park District. Ice skaters can enjoy two outdoor rinks– Meadowhill Rink, adjacent to Northbrook Junior High School, and Tower Rink, behind Village Hall. Hockey is allowed at Meadowhill Rink only, and players should wear full equipment for their safety. Both rinks have lights for evening hours.

For downhill excitement, the Park District maintains two sled hills, at Wood Oaks Green and Techny Prairie Park and Fields. Both sites provide restrooms, and the Techny Prairie Park and Fields sled hill is fully lighted during the evening hours. No skis, snowboards, roller blades, skateboards or bicycles are permitted on the sled hills. For updated information on the outdoor facilities, call (847) 291-2985, extension 3.

Sportsman’s Country Club offers groomed trails for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Skiers and hikers can bring their own equipment or rent skis or snowshoes. A six-to-eight inch snow base is required before skiing will be permitted. ###

PUBLIC ICE SKATING
(Ref:#0222-8) The Northbrook Sports Center offers public ice skating sessions for the whole family and provides rental skates. Public skating times are as follows:

     Monday             10:30am-Noon
      Wednesday                     10:30am-Noon and 4-5:15pm
     Friday               10:30am-Noon 

     Saturday                        4-5:15pm and
      Sunday                          3-4:15

Additional public sessions or changes will be posted at the Sports Center office. The fee for skating is $5 for adults, $4 for youth and $2 for children under age 5, and coupon books for 10 admissions offer reduced rates. The Northbrook Park District provides rental skates at a cost of $3 per pair and also offers discounted coupon books for 10 skate rentals. Private rentals of the ice rinks also are available on an hourly basis. For more information, call the Sports Center at (847) 291-2993.   ###

SCHOOL’S OUT TRIP: SHEDD AQUARIUM
(Ref:# 0222-10) On Pulaski Day, March 5, the Park District will take a group of students to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, to learn about life underwater. Students in kindergarten through 8th grade can go on the trip, which includes admission to a dolphin show. Participants will need to bring a non-refrigerated paper bag lunch. The group will leave from the Leisure Center at 9am and return at about 3pm; extended care is available before and after the program. The fee for the trip is $40 for Park District residents and $45 for non-residents. To find out whether space is still available, call (847) 291-2980.  ###

NEW POOL PARTIES
(Ref:# 0222-11) If you have a summer birthday in the family, you can plan now to celebrate with a splash at Meadowhill Aquatic Center. New for 2007, a birthday party package includes access to the entire Aquatic Center during normal pool hours, a two-hour rental of a private tented “party” area and a t-shirt for the birthday host. The Northbrook Park District will supply pizza or hot dogs and drinks, and guests can enjoy the pools, diving boards and water slides, along with relaxing on the deck. After hours, both the Meadowhill Aquatic Center and the Sports Center Pool are available for exclusive rental during the summer.
