SCHOOL’S OUT TRIP: SHEDD AQUARIUM (Ref:# 0215-13) When schools are closed on March 5 for Pulaski Day, the Park District will take a group of students to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Students in kindergarten through 8th grade can go on the trip, which includes admission to a dolphin show. Participants will need to bring a non-refrigerated paper bag lunch. The group will leave from the Leisure Center at 9am and return at about 3pm; extended care is available before and after the program. NEW JUNIOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (Ref:# 0215-1) The Northbrook Park District is introducing the Junior Leadership Program, a summer program for students entering grades 8 though 10 in the fall. Designed to provide teens with leadership training and practical work experience, the program will allow participants to assist in a variety of Park District areas, including summer camps, the pools and the golf course. Two days per week the teens will focus on job skills and team-building exercises to increase self-confidence. The leadership training is a four-week program, offered in two sessions this summer. Interested students need to complete an application, which is available at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue, and online at nbparks.org. Beginning in March, applicants will be interviewed on an ongoing basis. Students chosen for the program will need to pay a minimal fee of $100 per four-week placement, to help defray the costs of training, field trips and supplies. The deadline for applications is May 1. CO-ED BABYSITTING CLASS (Ref:# 0215-2) Children who want to prepare for babysitting jobs can take a co-ed class on two Saturdays in February. Under the guidance of certified Red Cross instructors, participants will learn how to handle a full range of babysitting responsibilities, including emergency procedures, infant care, basic first aid, feeding and diapering and safe play procedures. The course will be offered on February 17 and 24 from 1 to 5:30pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Students must be at least 11 years old, and at the end of the training, they will be Red Cross certified. The fee is $85 for Northbrook Park District residents and $90 for non-residents, and enrollment is limited to 12 students. HOLIDAY CLOSING (Ref:#0215-3) Northbrook Park District classes will not meet on Monday, February 19, in observance of Presidents’ Day. All Park District Registration and Administration offices will be closed as well. Classes will resume, and offices will reopen for business on Tuesday, February 20. ###
PRINCESS PUPPIES (Ref:# 0215-4) Children can join Kreative Kreations for a special class on March 19 and stuff a cuddly white puppy. The class includes a wishing star and birth certificate for the newborn creation. Children will design magical collars and rhinestone T-shirts for their new furry friends. The class is open to all children ages 3 to 12; children between 3 and 5 must be accompanied by an adult. The class will meet from 6 to 7pm at the Leisure Center in Northbrook, 3323 Walters Avenue, and the fee is $33 for Northbrook Park District residents and $38 for non-residents. WINTER SURVIVAL WALK (Ref:#0215-5) Children can escape the winter blues with snakes races and snowshoes during a Winter Survival Walk with the Northbrook Park District. On February 19, children ages 8 and up can explore nature on a snowshoe walk at the Trail Through Time in Techny Prairie Park and Fields. They'll discover how plants and animals cope with the chill and survive in the snow. The Park District will provide the snowshoes. The program also is available for Scout groups, with or without snow. The walk will take place from 3-4pm, and the fee is $7 for residents and $9 for non-residents. SPRING BREAK ESCAPES (Ref:#0215-6) The Northrbook Park District invites families to sign up for an action-packed Spring Break Camp during the week of March 26-30. The staff will offer exciting field trips to enjoy sports, swimming, arcade fun and theater. Limited tickets are available to see the popular show “Wicked” at the Ford Center for Performing Arts in Chicago on Wednesday, March 28. The other planned trips include the Libertyville Sports Complex, swimming at Arctic Splash, arcade fun at Rink Side Sports and a performance at the Lincolnshire Marriott Children’s Theater. All programs are open to the public, although Adventure Campus participants receive first priority. Two separate programs are scheduled, for Kindergarten through Grade 5 and Grades 6-8, and the Park District offers morning and afternoon extended care, with sports, games, arts and crafts and snacks. BASIC AID TRAINING (Ref:# 0215-9) A two-week Basic Aid Training is the perfect class for graduates of First Aid for Little People or any children who want to be first aid ready. This American Red Cross class will meet on March 3 and 10, focusing on action principles, rescue breathing, choking care, care for cuts, fire safety and poison control. The training will satisfy most first aid requirements for Boy Scout Aid badges. American Red Cross certified instructors will lead the program, designed for children in grades 4 through 6. The classes will meet from 1 to 4 pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue, and the fee for both classes is $45 for Northbrook Park District residents and $50 for non-residents. CAMP DEADLINES (Ref:# 0215-10) February 16 is the last day for priority registration and discounts for summer camp programs in Northbrook. The Park District is offering 10 full weeks of camp programs this summer, from June 11 through August 17, with exciting new camps as well as returning favorites. Families can choose half days or full days and three or five days per week, along with extended care before and after camp. SPRING SOCCER DEADLINE (Ref:# 0215-11) Friday, March 2 is the registration deadline for Spring Soccer 2007 with the Northbrook Park District. Teams are formed by school, and coaches will work with children on skill development, personal goal achievement, good sportsmanship and fitness. Practices begin the week of April 9, with games scheduled to begin on April 14 and 15. An orientation session is scheduled for parents of kindergarten players on March 19 at 6pm at the Village Green Center. Other parents can pick up rosters and schedules on March 20, between 6 and 7:30pm at the Village Green Center. The Park District needs men and women to volunteer for coaching; they can learn the rules of the game at free clinics, and a mandatory coaches meeting is scheduled for March 21 at 6pm at the Village Green Center. During soccer season, the Northbrook Park District Soccer Advisory Committee meets monthly, and all interested parents are invited to attend the meetings. BIRTHDAY BATTER UP! (Ref:# 0215-12) Planning a birthday party? You can score a home run or a grand slam with new party packages from the Northbrook Park District. The batting cages at Techny Prairie Park and Fields can be rented for parties, and we'll provide food for the guests. New for 2007, the "Home Run" party package includes two exclusive batting tunnel reservations for one hour and two hours in the adjacent pavilion, along with pizza and drinks for 10 guests, for a fee of just $150. The "Grand Slam" package includes three exclusive tunnel reservations for one hour and two hours in the pavilion, with pizza and drinks for 15 guests, for a fee of $200.
