WINTER CARNIVAL | (Ref:# 1206-1) On Saturday, January 5, families can celebrate the season with a Winter Carnival at the Village Green, from 11:30am-2:30pm. An annual tradition from the Northbrook Park District, the carnival will feature horse-drawn wagon rides, ice sculpture demonstrations, games and prizes and a chili cook-off. Judging for the cook-off will begin at 1pm, followed by prizes and a public tasting. Food also will be available for purchase. BOARD MEETING DECEMBER 12 (Ref:# 1206-2) The Northbrook Park District Board of Commissioners will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, December 12 at 7pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. WINTER BREAK ESCAPES (Ref:# 1206-3) December 10 is the deadline to register for Winter Break Escapes with the Northbrook Park District during the end-of-year school vacation. The staff is offering six days of field trips and activities between December 26 and January 4, for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. The choices include arcade fun, a movie and miniature golf, sports, live theatre and a trip to one of the most popular museums in Chicago. Extended care is available before and after the programs. PARK LARKS PERFORM (Ref:# 1206-4) The Park Larks, a Northbrook Park District singing group, will perform at a Holiday Songfest on Wednesday, December 12 at the Glenview United Methodist Church, 737 Harlem Avenue in Glenview. The concert is free and open to everyone; it begins at 12:30pm. Eight area choruses will participate in the annual event. HOLIDAY CELEBRATION (Ref:# 1206-5) On Thursday, December 13, the Northbrook Park District Senior Center will host a Holiday Celebration at the Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling. The entertainment includes Ladies First, a girls’ chorus from Glenbrook North High School. The event, which includes lunch, prizes and gifts, will begin at 11:30am at 1000 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wheeling, and the cost is $26. Membership in the Senior Center is not required. Call the Center at (847) 291-2988 to make reservations. ###
DIGITAL CAMERA CLASSES (Ref:# 1206-6) Adults can learn how to use digital cameras in a series of four classes, beginning on January 10 at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. The classes will be held on Thursdays, from 9:30-11:30am. Participants will learn to transfer pictures to a computer and adjust picture quality. Basic knowledge of the Windows 95, 98, ME or XP Operating System is a prerequisite. The fee for four classes is $120 for Senior Center members and $130 for nonmembers. BREAKFAST WITH SANTA (Ref:# 1206-7) On Saturday, December 8, The Northbrook Park District will serve a special holiday treat - breakfast with Santa Claus - at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue, from 9-10:30am. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, juice, milk and coffee, as well as a helping of holiday songs and a souvenir photograph. DADDY AND ME HOLIDAY BEAR WORKSHOP (Ref:# 1206-8) On December 17, children can create cuddly bears with their dad or a special male adult at a Kreative Kreations workshop from 6:30-7:30pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Participants will stuff the bears and make a birth certificate and a holiday outfit. The fee is $34 for Northbrook Park District residents and $39 for nonresidents. GINGERBREAD HOUSE WORKSHOP (Ref:# 1206-9) Children are invited to decorate a gingerbread house at a workshop on Wednesday, December 12 at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Park District staff will preassemble the basic houses, which children can bring to life with an assortment of sweet decorations and holiday features. The workshop, from 6-7:30pm, is designed for children ages 3-14 to attend with a parent. Pizza and drinks will be served. The fee is $30 for Northbrook Park District residents and $35 for nonresidents. Additional siblings or friends can attend for $12 each. HOLIDAY SKATING RECITAL (Ref:# 1206-10) The Northbrook Park District invites everyone to enjoy the skating artistry of our ice skating students at a Holiday Skating Recital on Friday, December 14. Skaters from Freestyle 1 and up will prepare their own programs and skate to music of their choosing. KICKBOXING (Ref:# 1206-11) Adults can get a taste of aerobics, western boxing and TaeKwonDo in a kickboxing fitness program, CARDIO-TKD, beginning January 8 at the Oriental Arts Training Center, at 3141 Dundee Road. Classes will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-10:45am. The fee for 11 classes is $99 for Northbrook Park District residents and $124 for nonresidents. The program will introduce students to basic techniques, such as punching, kicking and defensive moves, while increasing flexibility and strengthening core muscle groups. NEW SENIOR TRIPS (Ref:# 1206-12) Walk-in registration begins on Thursday, December 6 for new trips from the Northbrook Park District Senior Center. Seniors will have the chance to be part of a television show on February 6, with a visit to NBC Towers for the new program, “In the Loop with l Village.” A mystery lunch will follow the TV appearance. On February 27, a group will travel to Munster, Indiana for lunch and a performance of “La Cage Aux Folles." On April 3, a group of seniors can go to the Fireside Theatre in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin for the madcap musical “Anything Goes.” And seniors can make a date on April 8 to see “The Drowsy Chaperone” at Cadillac Palace in Chicago, with dinner at Greek Islands Restaurant before the show.
