HOLIDAY CLOSINGS (Ref:# 0830-1) Northbrook Park District classes and programs will not meet on Monday, September 3, due to the Labor Day holiday. All Park District Registration and Administration offices will be closed as well. Classes will resume and offices will reopen for business on Tuesday, September 4. ###
SOCCER COACHES MEETING (Ref:# 0830-2) All coaches for the Northbrook Park District’s Fall 2007 House League Soccer Program must attend a meeting on August 30 at 6pm at the Village Green Center, 1810 Walters Avenue. The coaches will pick up equipment and discuss the rules, expectations and goals for the upcoming season. Soccer players should save the date of September 16, for the 4th annual Soccer Fest. CALLING ALL SECRET AGENTS (Ref:# 0830-3) Students can become Secret Agents with Spybots, a new series of classes from the Northbrook Park District beginning on September 11. After building Lego® Spybots, students will use state-of-the-art software and communication systems between robots and the computer, racing against time to complete their missions. The program, designed for ages 7 and up, will run from 4-5pm on Tuesdays at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The fee for six classes is $128 for Park District residents and $133 for nonresidents. A second series of classes will begin at the end of October. FALL FESTIVAL (Ref:# 0830-4) Get ready for an exciting party in the park! On Saturday, September 29, the Northbrook Park District will host a Fall Festival at Techny Prairie Park and Fields from 8:30am-1pm. The entire community is invited to explore and enjoy the one-year-old park on Techny Road, where a huge parcel of land was transformed into a recreational showpiece. Family activities, demonstrations, contests and food will be available; the setting is more than 100 acres of nature, beauty and recreation. The Park District is proud to showcase the different areas of the park and share them with people who may not be familiar with the offerings.
Beginning at 8:30am, the Techny Trot 5K Run/Walk will welcome people into the park. Race participants are encouraged to register before the event at www.nbparks.org or in person at the Village Green Center. A Techny Kids’ Dash will follow the race. After 9am, children can enjoy a variety of activities, including face painting, clowns and balloon artists. Park visitors also can enjoy fishing, free batting cages, demonstrations by professional soccer and lacrosse players, golf contests, a “Who’s Who in Northbrook” softball game, skateboarding demonstrations and open skating. Children and adults can tie-dye T-shirts for a $5 donation to the Northbrook Arts Commission and join volunteers in removing invasive plants from the award-winning Trail Through Time. The park also offers a playground, pathway system and picnic shelters. PARK LARKS (Ref:# 0830-5) Senior adults who enjoy Broadway show tunes are invited to join the Park Larks, a Northbrook Park District singing group under the direction of former concert pianist Evelyn Binz. The group rehearses on Thursday mornings from 9:30-11:30am at the Northbrook Leisure Center and entertains from September through June at shopping centers, senior centers, and retirement homes. Both men and women are welcome in the group and can join at any time after becoming members of the Senior Center. The Park Larks will perform at the annual Senior Lifestyle Expo on September 6 at 10am at the Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace. FINAL POOL DAYS
(Ref:# 0830-6) A few more days remain to enjoy swimming, diving and water fun at the Meadowhill Aquatic Center this summer. On August 30 and 31, the pools and slides will be open from 4-8pm for public swimming. During the Labor Day holiday weekend, the pools will be open from Noon until 8pm. The Sports Center pool is closed for the season. ###
BATTING CAGES: FALL HOURS (Ref:# 0830-7) With children back in school, the batting cages at Techny Prairie Park and Fields have switched to fall hours of operation. Monday through Friday hours are 4-10pm, and weekend hours are Noon-10pm. Six batting cages are available, and players can choose to swing at baseballs or softballs, with 12 pitches for $1. Teams or groups can reserve the cages in 30-minute intervals. Helmets are required and provided. The Northbrook Park District also offers birthday party packages, which include the exclusive use of batting cages, pizza and soft drinks. TOUCH-A-TRUCK (Ref:# 0830-8) The trucks are coming to Northbrook! Dump trucks, moving vans, fire trucks and more will be on display Saturday, September 15 from Noon-2pm for the popular Touch-a-Truck event. Curious children can climb aboard and explore the trucks at Techny Prairie Park and Fields, 1750 Techny Road. Hard hats and cameras are welcome. This hands-on activity is free and open to the public, but children must attend with an adult. No registration is necessary. ###
NATURE AT NIGHT (Ref:# 0830-9) On September 19, children can enjoy a campfire and Native American games as part of Nature at Night on the Trail Through Time in Northbrook. On September 26, an outdoor evening program will focus on animals preparing for winter in Illinois. Designed for ages 8 and up, the outdoor adventures will begin at the Trail Through Time Council Ring next to Illinois Road in Techny Prairie Park and Fields. Younger children can attend with an adult. The programs are scheduled from 5:30-6:30pm, and the fee is $6 for Northbrook Park District residents and $10 for non-residents. Registration is required. KREATIVE KREATIONS (Ref:# 0830-10) On Thursday, September 20, parents can learn the skills to create glamorous hair for their daughters, in a class at the Northbrook Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue, from 6:30-8pm. The class is designed for ages 3-14 to attend with a parent. Each girl will receive a new hair style with accessories and a goodie bag to take home. BICYCLE RACING SEASON FINALE (Ref:# 0830-11) The September 6th season finale for bicycle racing at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome will include a barbeque for the racers, fans and spectators. A full slate of bicycle racing is planned, which typically includes about 15 different contests. The races will begin at 6:45pm and will end by about 10pm. The spectator fee is $2 for ages 12-adult, and children under 12 are admitted free. There is no cost for the food. The Velodrome is an official quarter-mile banked racing track located in Meadowhill Park, 1479 Maple Avenue, off Waukegan Road. ###

Children can climb aboard an assortment of trucks, and seniors can get reduced RTA fares and help with driving. TINY TREKS (Ref:# 0830-13) Tiny Treks classes will begin on September 6, allowing preschool children to chase butterflies, fly kites and visit nature preserves and farms. Parents or caregivers and children will take short hikes in a variety of outdoor settings in addition to enjoying music, art, movement and games. Weekly locations will be close to downtown Northbrook. The Northbrook Park District will offer the classes on Thursday mornings from 9:15-10:45am and on Fridays from 9:15-10:45am. LINE DANCING (Ref:# 0830-14) Step right up to learn International Line Dancing with Country Bernie. Beginning on Thursday, September 20, the Northbrook Park District will offer a series of eight evening classes from 7-8pm on Thursdays. The entertaining instructor has performed at the Taste of Chicago and the Daley Center. Participants can learn the Mambo, Cha-Cha, Tango and Bossa Nova, as well as the latest in line dances. No partner is required for the classes, which meet at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The fee for 8 classes is $45 for Park District residents and $55 for nonresidents. CHAIR EXERCISE (Ref:# 0830-15) Adults of all fitness levels are invited to sit down and exercise in a new class beginning on September 7 with the Northbrook Park District. The class, called Chair Nia, will adapt dance-like routines for those who want a fun and expressive workout while seated. Nia is a unique form of fusion fitness that combines movements and concepts from martial arts, dance traditions and balance work. No movement experience is necessary, and students are encouraged to go at their own pace. Chairs will be provided at the Village Green Center. Students with caretakers or special needs are welcome. The Friday morning class is taught by Margaret Armour, Certified Nia Instructor, who also teaches Nia classes on Mondays and Fridays for workouts without chairs.
