REDUCED SENIOR FARES (Ref:# 0823-1) Seniors can ride the CTA, Metra and Pace for half-fare, if they take a trip to the Northbrook Park District’s Senior Center on Friday, September 14. Registration will be offered from 11am to 1pm. Riders need to be 65 or older and will need to bring one of the following: a driver’s license, passport, RTA reduced fare permit, state ID, U.S. Immigration Alien Registration card or other official government ID with a photo and birth date. SOCCER PARENT ORIENTATION (Ref:# 0823-2) The Kindergarten soccer program will kick off with an orientation meeting for parents on August 27 at 6pm at the Village Green Center. Players do not need to attend; parents will receive schedules and learn the league rules and objectives. The Park District program is designed to introduce children to the game, with an emphasis on having fun. Coaches will work with children on skill development, personal goal achievement, good sportsmanship and fitness. The program includes seven games. On August 29, parents of players in grades 1-8 can pick up rosters and schedules between 6 and 7:30pm at the Village Green Center. ###
HOCKEY REGISTRATION (Ref:# 0823-3) The Northbrook Hockey League will hold registration for the fall/winter season on Saturday, August 25 from 9-11am and Tuesday, August 28 from 5:30-8pm at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. The League is a volunteer organization that works closely with the Northbrook Park District to provide a high-quality hockey program. DEADLINE FOR BROOKFIELD ZOO TRIP (Ref:# 0823-6) August 30 is the deadline to sign up for a trip to Brookfield Zoo with the Northbrook Park District, when school’s out on September 13. Participants should bring a paper bag lunch and drink to the program, which is open to the public. The trip will include a dolphin show and a visit to the children’s petting zoo. The group will meet at the Leisure Center in Northbrook at 9am and return by 3pm. LAST BICYCLE RACES (Ref:# 0823-7) September 6 is the final night of bicycle racing for the summer at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook. The excitement of competitive racing attracts cyclists from across the country to Thursday night races. The fast-paced action begins at 7pm. The fee for spectators is $2 for ages 12-adult. Children under 12 are free. The last race includes a barbeque. Located in Meadowhill Park, the Velodrome is one of the few official quarter-mile cycling tracks in the country and part of the Northbrook Park District. MINI SPORTS - SOCCER (Ref:# 0823-8) Young children can learn the sport of soccer with a program starting on September 11 from the Northbrook Park District. Mini Sports – Soccer will teach the rules and skills of the game in six classes on Tuesday afternoons, from 4-4:45pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Children must be in kindergarten or 1st grade to participate. The fee for six classes is $80 for Park District residents and $100 for nonresidents. Space is limited. GUARD-A-KID (Ref:# 0823-9) Children can learn about stranger danger, and parents can receive child identification and safety kits through a program called Guard-A-Kid, offered by the Northbrook Park District on September 19 from 6-7:30pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. During the program, children will watch a video and learn how to respond if approached by a stranger. They also will have photographs and fingerprints taken for the ID kits, which will be ready to take home at the end of the class. A coloring activity and snack are included. The class is designed for children ages 3-10 to attend with a parent. The fee is $26 for Park District residents and $31 for non-residents. DIGITAL MOVIE MAKING (Ref:# 0823-10) Move over, Steven Spielberg! Students will be able to shoot their own videos and make movies with a new series of classes from the Northbrook Park District, beginning on September 11. Designed for ages 8-12, the class will meet on Tuesdays from 4-5pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Imaginations can soar in this creative program; participants will be able to edit their movies, adding titles, credits, animation, music and special effects, and they’ll take home a CD/DVD of the finished product. COOL COSMIC SKATING (Ref:# 0823-11) Ice skaters can beat the heat with a cool evening of cosmic skating on Friday nights at the Northbrook Sports Center from 8-10pm. Y’ALL COME CHOIR (Ref:# 0823-12) The Y’All Come Choir of Northbrook will begin its fall season on September 10, with a 7:30pm meeting at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. All singers are invited to join the choir, which does not require auditions and is affiliated with the Northbrook Park District. The choir rehearses on Monday evenings and performs at many area venues. All voice parts are welcome, but registration is required.
Choir members will be able to participate in a unique musical event, called Sing for the Cure®, A Proclamation of Hope, with the Chicago Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Two performances with orchestra and choir are scheduled for June 7 and June 8, 2008 at the Field School and will feature a well-known narrator to be announced in January. The performance is described as an awareness concert to further the message of hope for everyone affected by breast cancer.
Composed for the Komen Foundation, Sing for the Cure is a symphonic song cycle dedicated to breast cancer survivors, their families and friends. Librettist Pamela Martin of Austin, Texas incorporated the stories of breast cancer survivors and their loved ones into 10 songs. Then, 10 composers wrote the scores, reflecting the tone and meaning of the lyrics. GPS ADVENTURES (Ref:# 0823-13) A new program called Adventures with GPS Receivers will teach children basic orienteering and introduce them to Geo-Caching, an outdoor adventure hobby that uses Global Positioning Satellite devices. The Northbrook Park District will introduce a high-tech treasure hunt in a series of Thursday afternoon classes that start September 20 at the Leisure Center. Students will set out on a “geo-safari” and be able to blog about their adventures. YOUR FINANCIAL HOUSE (Ref:# 0823-15) A financial planner from Northbrook will guide adults through a discussion of money matters on Friday, September 7 at the Northbrook Park District Senior Center at 10:30am. The session can shed light on the mysteries of Medicare and long-term care insurance and address other financial concerns. Registration is necessary by September 4.
