SOCCER DEADLINE (Ref:# 0802-1) The registration deadline for Fall Soccer with the Northbrook Park District is Friday, August 3 at 5pm. The District provides a house league with an emphasis on the development of the child as an individual and an athlete, rather than an emphasis on the competitive aspect of winning. The goal of the program is to provide a fun and safe atmosphere in which children can learn respect, sportsmanship and soccer skills. All players will receive equal playing time and will be introduced to all positions. Teams are formed by school, and when possible, leagues for boys and girls will be separate. Volunteers trained by the Park District serve as coaches. Registration is available online at www.nbparks.org or in person at all customer service locations. Specific information about game and practice days can be found in the Autumn Recreation Guide. For more information, call the Athletic and Aquatics Office at (847) 291-2369. ###
THE FASTEST AND THE FINEST (Ref:# 0802-2) On Friday, August 3, police and firefighters in the Chicago area will compete in a bicycle race in Northbrook, to find the fastest uniform on two wheels. The contest will take place at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome, a quarter-mile outdoor track at Meadowhill Park. Racing begins at 7pm, and three races will be held – a scratch race, an unknown distance race and a “cops & robbers” pursuit. The officers must race the same bike that they use to patrol their towns, and they are asked to race in their uniforms. Everyone is invited to support the public safety officers, while enjoying fast-paced racing around an authentic banked track. There is no admission fee for spectators. The Velodrome is located at Waukegan Road and Maple Avenue, just east of downtown Northbrook. In the event of rain, the bike challenge will be moved to Friday, August 10. For more information, visit www.northbrookbicycleclub.org. ###
