SPORTS HALL OF FAME
(Ref:# 0403-1) The Northbrook Park District has elected Jim Papreck into its Sports Hall of Fame to recognize his sports accomplishments. Papreck is the Director of Public Works for the Village of Northbrook, and he’s also a three-time World Champion in barrel jumping, which is similar to the long jump in track and field but involves jumping over barrels – on ice skates. The skater circles the rink once, picking up speed, and launches into the air, leaping over a row of cardboard barrels placed side by side on the ice.

In 1969, Papreck was refereeing hockey for the Park District, when two speed skaters and barrel jumpers noticed him during scrimmage games and asked if he wanted to learn barrel jumping. Just one year later, he became World Champion in New York and repeated his win in 1975. He captured his third title before a hometown crowd in 1977, when the competition was held at the Northbrook Sports Center and televised on “ABC’s Wide World of Sports.” His winning jump was 29 feet, 4 inches, clearing 16 barrels.

The Park District will prepare two plaques recognizing Papreck. One will be placed in a display case at the Sports Center, and the Board of Park Commissioners will present him with a second one at a reception in his honor. The Sports Hall of Fame was created to recognize the accomplishments of community members who have achieved professional status in a sport or won championships at the national level. The two barrel jumpers who coached Papreck were Charles Burke and Richard Widmark; Burke previously was inducted into the Northbrook Sports Hall of Fame and nominated Papreck for the latest honor. ###
