TINY TOT OLYMPICS (Ref:# 0426-3) Everyone will be a winner at the new Tiny Tot Olympics from the Northbrook Park District on Saturday, April 28. Children ages 3 to 5 will compete in a series of activities designed to test their abilities. Competing against a clock and not against each other, all participants will receive an award. The Olympics will run from 11am until noon at the Northbrook Leisure Center, and the fee is $5 per child. Registration is available online at nbparks.org and at all customer service locations. SENIOR DRIVING SAFETY (Ref:# 0426-4) Adults can refresh their driving skills with a two-day class on May 21 and 22 at the Northbrook Senior Center. Geared to drivers age 50 and over, the AARP Driver Safety program consists of two four-hour sessions, covering much of the information needed to pass the Illinois license exam. Completion of the class may entitle participants to a discount on their car insurance. The classes are scheduled for 9am-1pm both days, and the Senior Center is located at 3323 Walters Avenue. BIKE RACING BEGINS (Ref:# 0426-6) Calling all cyclists: On April 30, the Northbrook Cycle Committee will begin a Monday evening training program at the Park District’s Ed Rudolph Velodrome. The program welcomes experienced track riders as well as people who never have ridden at the Velodrome, an official quarter-mile banked cycling track in Meadowhill Park. The sessions will include a variety of noncompetitive programs, such as pace line riding, acceleration training, sprinting drills, motor pacing and simulated races. Time will be set aside for those learning how to ride a fixed gear track bike and use the Velodrome banking. The program starts at 7pm, with a warm-up at 6:30pm, and the fee is $7 per evening. LITTLE MISS TEA PARTY (Ref:# 0426-7) All young ladies are invited to attend a Little Miss Tea Party at the Northbrook Park District Leisure Center on Saturday, May 5, from 1-2pm. Finger sandwiches and dessert will be served, along with tea and juice, and a local singer will provide entertainment. Girls are encouraged to dress up and bring a favorite doll or teddy bear, along with a parent or special adult, to this new event. The fee for a girl and parent is $35 for residents and $40 for non-residents. Additional daughters can attend for a fee of $15. Registration is accepted at all customer service locations and online at nbparks.org. ###
KIDS FISHING DERBY (Ref:# 0426-8) Save the date of May 19 for a free Kids Fishing Derby at Lake Shermerville in Wood Oaks Green from noon until 2pm. Prizes will be awarded to boys and girls in two age groups: 4-8 years and 9-12 years. Children can bring a rod or borrow one from the Park District, and no fishing licenses are required. With the help of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the lake will be stocked with bluegills and pumpkinseeds (small, brightly colored sunfish) in addition to bass, crappies and catfish. There will be prizes for the biggest fish and the most fish caught. Fishing will be on a “catch and release” basis, and no experience is necessary. Hot dogs and snacks will be available. MAGIC ON ICE (Ref:# 0426-9) More than 400 skaters will take part in this year’s production of Northbrook-On-Ice, “Abracadabra-Axel-Alacazam!” on May 11-13. The annual show by skating students at the Northbrook Sports Center will focus on magic and illusions, such as flying and invisibility. For the first time, the talented Icettes and Junior Icettes will perform a combined number; almost 50 students will skate to a medley of Beatles songs. The newly formed Northbrook Dancettes also will perform an energetic dance routine. The highly-regarded ice show features special effects, beautiful costumes, music and imaginative props. Performances are scheduled for May 11 at 7:30pm, May 12 at 2pm and 7:30pm and May 13 at 2pm at the Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. Call (847) 291-2993 for tickets or more information. TRY A LITTLE LAUGHTER (Ref:# 0426-10) Get ready to laugh more, with the help of a new class from the Northbrook Park District on May 10 from 12:30-3pm. Instructor Om Johari will guide a group of adults in laughter, with a 15 minute break during the session. The class will be held at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue, and the fee is $10 for members and $20 for non-members.
