CELL PHONE CLASSES
(Ref:# 0424-1) Beginning on Thursday, May 1, adults can connect to the latest in cell phone technology with a series of three classes from the Northbrook Park District, called
How to Use Your Cell Phone. Participants should bring their cell phones and chargers to class and will learn how to store names and numbers, how to store and send pictures and how to use Blue Tooth technology, if applicable. Classes will be held from 1-3pm at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The fee for three classes is $100 for Senior Center members and $110 for nonmembers. SENIOR VOLUNTEER LUNCH
(Ref:# 0424-2) On Friday, May 16, the Senior Center will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, beginning at 11:30am at the Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. A catered lunch will be followed by entertainment and a ceremony to thank the volunteers who help make the Senior Center a welcome place. All adults are welcome to attend the event; the cost is $10 for Senior Center members and $15 for nonmembers. To sign up or get more information, call (847) 291-2988.  ###

FLY CASTING CLASSES
(Ref:# 0424-3) Teens and adults can learn the sport of fly casting, beginning on Wednesday, May 7 at the Northbrook Park District Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Classes are limited to eight students and will meet from 4:30-6pm; the instructor will have limited rental equipment available on request. The fee for five classes is $110 for Northbrook Park District residents and $120 for nonresidents. Registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. An intermediate class will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30-8pm; students need permission from the instructor to enroll. For more information, call (847) 291-2980.  ###

PLAY READING
(Ref:# 0424-4) On May 7, the curtain will rise on a new
Readers’ Theatre―Play Reading Series, allowing seniors to put on a show without auditioning or memorizing any lines. Participants will choose four plays, divide up the parts and read the stories out loud, also researching the authors and discussing the stories. The eight-week series will meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:30am at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Cast size is limited, so early registration is advised. The fee is $15 for Senior Center members and $25 for nonmembers. Registration is accepted at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org. BOARD MEETING APRIL 30
(Ref:# 0424-5) The Northbrook Park District Board of Commissioners will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 30 at 7pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The public is welcome to attend. Agendas for the monthly meetings are posted online at www.nbparks.org in the Board meeting section. ###

KIDS FISHING DERBY
(Ref:# 0424-6) On May 17, the popular Kids Fishing Derby will return to Lake Shermerville in Wood Oaks Green from Noon to 2pm. Beginning at 11am, volunteers from the Izaack Walton League, a national conservation organization, will show children how to bait and tie a hook and how to cast a line. They’re also donating prizes, which will be awarded in two age groups: 4 to 8 years and 9 to 12 years. Children can bring their own equipment or use rods, reels and bait from the Park District, and fishing is on a “catch and release” basis. No experience is necessary, and no fishing license is needed during the derby. Snacks will be available for purchase. For more information, call Julie Hansen at (847) 291-2995. ###

JUNIOR LEADERSHIP DEADLINE
(Ref:# 0424-7) May 2 is the deadline for applications to the Junior Leadership Program for students entering grades 8-10 in the fall. The summer program will allow students to work in a variety of Park District areas, including camps, golf, theatre and ice skating; two days each week they will focus on building job-related skills. Anyone interested in being a Junior Leader must complete an application, available at the Leisure Center Office, 3323 Walters Avenue, or online at www.nbparks.org. Participants accepted in the program will need to pay a fee of $100 to cover the cost of training, field trips and supplies. For more information, call (847) 291-2995.  ###

MINI GOLF OPEN
(Ref:# 0424-8) The 18-hole miniature golf course at Sportsman’s Country Club is open for the season. The hours this week (from April 24 through April 27) are: Monday through Friday 8am-8pm and Saturday and Sunday, 7am-8pm. Additional hours will be added later in the season. The fee on weekdays is $3.50 for youth (to age 17) and $4.75 for adults; weekend rates are $5.25 for youth and $6 for adults. Group rates also are available. GEAR UP FOR BICYCLE RACING
(Ref:# 0424-9) On May 15, the official bicycle racing season opens at 7pm at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome, 1479 Maple Avenue in Meadowhill Park. Championship races are held at the quarter-mile cycling track on Thursday nights and select weekends. The public is invited to enjoy the exciting and fast-paced action at the banked track, one of only a few official quarter-mile bike tracks in the nation. The fee for spectators is $2 for ages 12-adult; children under 12 are free. The Velodrome also offers evening training sessions, beginning on April 29, and Friday bike races for all ages, beginning June 13. For more information, call (847) 291-2369. ### 

“ALADDIN” PERFORMANCES
(Ref:# 0424-10) Performances of “Aladdin” will run on Saturdays through May 24 at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue in Northbrook. The entertaining show is from the Northbrook Musical Theatre for Young Audiences, a resident company of adult actors performing family-style productions. Show times are 10:30am and 1pm; the musical runs about one hour. All seats are reserved and are $8 in advance and $10 online and the day of the show. GLITZY GIRLZ KITCHEN KREATIONS
(Ref:# 0424-11) Just in time for Mother’s Day, a Glitzy Girlz program on May 7 allows mothers and their children to create kitchen accents together, from 6:30-7:45pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Each couple will design and decorate a canvas apron, pot holder, flower vase, recipe holder and personalized wood tray. Wear old clothes to get messy with glitter paints, rubber stamps and more. Participants also will create a real food surprise. Ages 4-11 are welcome with a parent; the fee is $34 for Northbrook park District residents and $39 for nonresidents. Class size is limited; registration is available at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org.  ###

ADULT COOKING WORKSHOP
(Ref:# 0424-12) On May 9, adults can get cooking with
Girls’ Night In, a cooking workshop from 6:30-9pm at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Appetizers and desserts are on the menu, including coconut chicken strips, steak quesadillas, chocolate fondue and berry trifles. The fee for the culinary adventure is $65 for Northbrook Park District residents and $81 for nonresidents.
