VOLLEYBALL CLINIC (Ref:# 0417-1) Students can learn to pass, set and attack in a volleyball skills clinic that begins on April 23 from 7-9pm at the Maple School West Gym. The Northbrook Park District is offering the program for girls and boys in grades 6-8. The fee for 6 classes is $65 for Northbrook Park District residents and $80 for nonresidents. SWING AWAY: BATTING CAGE HOURS (Ref:# 0417-2) Weather permitting, the batting cages at Techny Prairie Park and Fields will open for the season on Saturday, April 19. The spring hours of operation are as follows: 4-10pm Monday-Friday and Noon-10pm on weekends. Six batting cages are available, and players can choose to swing at baseballs or 12" softballs, for a fee of $1 for 12 pitches. Groups and teams also can reserve the cages in 30-minute intervals. BODY CONDITIONING FOR TEENS (Ref:# 0417-3) On Thursday, April 17, teenagers can begin a series of body conditioning classes from 4-4:45pm at the Village Green, 1810 Walters Avenue. Classes will combine yoga, Pilates, boxing, resistance training and cardio interval training. The fee for four classes is $50 for Northbrook Park District residents and $65 for nonresidents. FREE CELL PHONES FOR SENIORS (Ref:# 0417-4) Northbrook residents over the age of 65 can receive a free emergency cell phone on Friday, April 18 at 10am at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. The phone can call 9-1-1 only, to reach police, the fire department or paramedics. Reservations are necessary for the program from the Cook County Sheriff’s office; call the Senior Center at (847) 291-2988. SUMMER SKATING (Ref:# 0417-5) On April 23, non-resident registration begins for spring and summer ice skating sessions at the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. Skaters must present signed placement slips, unless they’re enrolling in an introductory level class. The Spring Session runs for three weeks, beginning on May 12. SKATEBOARDING LESSONS AND CAMP (Ref:# 0417-6) Beginners and intermediate skaters can sign up for skateboarding lessons and camps at the Techny Prairie Park and Fields skate park. Lessons will begin on May 3 from 9-10am for ages 5-7 and 9-11am for ages 8-13. Camp programs begin on June 16 and are scheduled on a weekly basis. All participants need to bring a skateboard and drink; helmets and protective gear are strongly encouraged. ADULT RECESS WORKOUT (Ref:# 0417-7) Sponge ball tennis, chariot races, playground Olympics and dodge ball are some of the activities in a series of adult recess workouts at the Village Green, 1810 Walters Avenue. A Thursday night series begins on April 17 from 5:15-6pm, and a Tuesday night series will begin on May 13 at the same time. The fee for four classes is $50 for Northbrook Park District residents and $65 for nonresidents. Other sessions starting in May and June will offer a choice of four or eight classes. 10/10/10 WORKOUT (Ref:# 0417-8) Adults can enjoy a 30-minute fitness program called a 10/10/10 workout beginning Friday, April 18 at 10:30am the Village Green, 1810 Walters Avenue. The class features 10 minutes of cardio activities, 10 minutes of strength training/body toning exercises and 10 minutes of flexibility, balance and core training for a complete workout. All levels of fitness are welcome. Four classes will be offered on Friday mornings along with the option of Monday mornings or Monday and Friday mornings. The fee for is $35 for 4 classes or $70 for eight classes for Northbrook park District residents and $45 or $90 for nonresidents. PLAY READING SERIES (Ref:# 0417-9) A new Readers’ Theatre―Play Reading Series will begin on May 7, allowing seniors to put on a show without auditions or memorizing any lines. Participants will choose four plays, divide up the parts and read the stories out loud, also researching the authors and discussing the stories. The eight-week series will meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:30am at the Senior Center, 3323 Walters Avenue. Cast size is limited, so early registration is advised. The fee is $15 for Senior Center members and $25 for nonmembers. Registration is accepted at all customer service locations and online at www.nbparks.org.
